Hello!. My name is John Benton, LCSW from Illinois. I have been a licensed therapist since 2007 working 19 years in a community mental health center. Prior to that i was counseling in group homes for adolescent boys and girls who had serious behavior and thinking problems. I have treated many mental health issues arise in various ethnicities and age groups. I have also supervised staff in properly applying counseling techniques and behavior modifications to help youth successfully reintegrate to their homes of origin, foster homes, and in society in general.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together, we'll start with brief introductions and basic expectations for each of us. Then we will explore your current and past mental health challenges and se up a unique treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. We will determine when and how often to meet to address any concerns you have.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Having used CBT, DBT, Behavior Modification, and Christian Counseling for many years has given me much experience helping others to achieve their individual goals. I take a non judgmental approach to your specific needs, assisting others to overcome their personal mental health challenges. I have assisted those in crisis many times, helping them to access needed services and to safely get through a crisis without making it worse.

My treatment methods

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I have compassion for those suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder. I use the DBT skills training manual and walk clients through the process step by step. It has dramatically changed the lives of many, as they gain control of the emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use CBT to help people to fully recover from depression and/or anxiety. Changing thinking and behavior will reduce much suffering and allow people to live their lives unencumbered by stress.

Christian Counseling

I use the Bible and Christian faith to help clients who want this a part of their therapeutic recovery. I use faith in God and knowledge of the Bible to help people address problematic behaviors and thinking patterns. The Bible sets the guideline for success for Christians. God wants to help you recover from your problems.

Couples Counseling

I work to find common ground to help couples improve their relationship. Focusing on individual and mutual strengths, I help couples to find the love they may have lost.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

For those who seek a short term therapy solution, I provide concise therapeutic interventions to achieve goals quickly.
