Hi, I'm Chris! I've been practicing since 2016 and have worked with a variety of clients such as domestic violence survivors, human trafficking survivors, people with anger issues, individuals in difficult relationships, people who are depressed, people who have anxiety, individuals with PTSD, individuals in jails and prisons, and people who just aren't sure of where to turn to for help. I earned my Master's Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Hodges University, and my BS in Criminal Justice from Florida Gulf Coast University. I started my private practice in 2022 after working for a national public mental health agency, which specializes in serious mental illness.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session, we will explore in depth why you've come to me for help. You'll tell me your story and I'll ask some questions along the way- however i really like to allow my client to go where they need to. Often times this includes a lot of diversions into things that the client may not feel are relevant... but relax- it's ALL relevant! I'll sum everything up and give you my best thoughts and one intervention for you to practice. I'll also ask you if there is anything specific you would like to try to hold you accountable for. Then we'll meet up in a week or two and chat about your experience.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

My biggest strength is that I have unconditional positive regard for my clients. I believe in you, and I believe that you have the answers to what is happening and why. Sometimes you just need validation, and an educated opinion on what is appropriate and what is not. On the other hand, I'm not just going to "rah rah" you through therapy and tell you that some behaviors are ok. I'm not going to observe you performing the same behaviors and not comment on it. My job is to help you figure out a better way to do things that create stressful patterns. I take that job very seriously.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

My primary training is in CBT- your thoughts control your behaviors and everything about your beliefs. With this therapy I work with clients to reframe their thoughts help them change their behaviors as well.

EMDR

I use EMDR to help clients process distressing thoughts in order to be able to face past traumas or current anxieties in order to live a more balanced life. If you are interested in this specific type of therapy, please visit my website https://chrisselukcounseling.net/?page_id=393 for specific information. I do not offer this therapy on this platform, but it is available online.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is a type of therapy that I use with clients who aren't quite ready for change. We discuss why the client has come to therapy along with what their specific goals are. We then take baby steps together to help the client make incremental changes for a positive outcome.

Meeting with a new provider can be daunting and I was definitely nervous at the start of our appointment. Chris was very clear on how the session would go, asked insightful questions, and just generally put me at ease. She was super personable and I was able to get comfortable very quickly. I really enjoyed meeting with her and have high hopes for whatever treatment plan we lean into.
