About me

Hi, I'm Hilary Chentow, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who believes therapy should be engaging, practical, and tailored to each individual. Before becoming a therapist, I was a teacher, and I bring that same passion for learning into my work. I help clients understand their thoughts, emotions, and nervous system while building practical skills they can use long after therapy ends. I provide telehealth therapy to adults in Pennsylvania, Washington, and Delaware.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Our first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and decide whether we're a good fit. We'll discuss what brings you to therapy, your goals, and any previous experiences you've had with counseling, including what was helpful and what wasn't. I'll introduce you to Portia Nelson's poem "There's a Hole in My Sidewalk," which provides a simple but powerful framework for understanding patterns, change, and personal growth. I'll also explain my unique approach to therapy, which combines my background as a teacher with a strengths-based, practical style. Together, we'll begin building a shared understanding of your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and nervous system while identifying skills and strategies that can support you between sessions. My goal is for you to leave your first session feeling heard, hopeful, and with a clearer sense of how we'll work together to create meaningful, lasting change.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I combine the heart of a therapist with the mindset of a teacher. I use humor, warmth, and authenticity to create a strong therapeutic relationship and offer clients a ladder, a flashlight, and a backpack. The ladder represents a path toward change, the flashlight helps us better understand thoughts, emotions, and patterns, and the backpack is filled with practical tools and skills you can carry into everyday life. My goal is for clients to leave each session with greater insight, confidence, and the ability to become their own best therapist.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I'm best suited for clients who are curious, motivated, and ready to actively participate in their own growth. If you enjoy learning, appreciate practical tools, and are willing to practice new skills between sessions, we'll likely work well together. I often suggest readings, worksheets, podcasts, or other "homework" because lasting change happens both inside and outside the therapy room. My clients often describe my style as warm, direct, and encouraging. I believe in offering a "loving kick in the butt" when it's needed—challenging you with compassion, celebrating your progress, and helping you stay accountable to the goals that matter most to you. If you're looking for a therapist who will simply nod and listen, I may not be the best fit. If you're ready to roll up your sleeves, embrace your curiosity, and make meaningful, measurable changes, I'd love to work with you.

Hilary is a fantastic therapist, especially for someone like me who has struggled to find the right person. She has a very unique style that's strongly rooted in evidence-based practices. She gives you so many resources that you can easily access during the week when you aren't in therapy. I highly recommend her as a therapist, particularly for queer people or people working through deep-rooted trauma.
