Welcome! Making the decision to better your mental health is an important step toward improving your quality of life and feeling healthier. I am a seasoned, Clinical Psychologist with 25 + years of extensive experience assisting clients identify problem areas that are contributing to distress and unhappiness in their lives and develop strategies to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. I have a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University and have worked in many different settings with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma and those dealing with life stressors or events that are interfering with life. I strive to create a safe, warm and welcoming environment that allows clients to feel at ease as they explore and work on obstacles /problems to lead to positive change. I look forward to working with you on your journey to better health and peace of mind.
A first session will include time getting acquainted, gathering a history and understanding of the issue that brought you to treatment, discussion of your goals and expectations and what you hope to get out of therapy. Together a treatment plan is developed, including a review of the type of therapy that would be the best fit based on our meeting together, where you want to be a month from now, six months from now, a year from now.
Strengths I bring to the therapy relationship are my extensive experience, a commitment for open and direct communication and flexibility to meet the needs of clients. I am a believer in providing a warm and welcoming treatment space, respect individuality and diversity and an appreciation for the uniqueness in each person's situation. I believe I do a good job in working together with clients, gently encouraging and building change and confidence.
My work is often with adults facing a transition or challenge in their life, including relationships, physical health or life transitions such as jobs/work change, retirement, or a change in how one views their life circumstance and identity, such as from married or partnered to single or divorced. I work well with those struggling with issues of depression and anxiety and are seeking strategies to improve their quality of life and want to be active in constructing it.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
ACT is an effective therapy approach to assist clients to face challenging experiences and emotions in order to decrease the power that these experiences have over the individual and in turn become easier to manage. Most individuals find this helpful in applying it to everyday life and helps to move forward through difficulty emotions so energy can be focused into healing instead of being stuck on negative experiences and feelings.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
CBT is an effective treatment that helps clients identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts and learn to look at alternative ways of approaching a problem. It helps clients recognize how thoughts, feelings and behaviors influence each other. This insight helps to change your thinking patterns and leads to reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Interpersonal
Over 25 years of experience to help clients examine interpersonal connections, faulty thinking and build self-awareness and healthy behaviors. This treatment approach helps equip you with new more helpful ways of interacting in your life, which will improve relationships and connections with others and improves emotional well being.
Gender-affirming therapy
I have been an ally to the community and devoted a large part of my practice to providing quality mental health care and support to the LGBTQI community. I served on the transgender care team at a large medical center for four years and individual therapy for the LGBTQ community for twenty years. I provide affirming and supportive care in a safe treatment environment.

I found Dr. Barber to be very honest but very loving provider. She asked very intelligent questions and listened to my response. Very thoughtful in the advice she gave me. I will continue to seek Dr. Barber's recommendations as I go on this journey.

Nancy is an incredible therapist. I was given 10 options to select what stands out about Nancy’s style, however, the options limited me to choosing only two! Truthfully , she is every bit of all ten! I have had exceptional therapy in the past. I have spent years trying to find someone exceptional. Grace brought me to Nancy. I am tremendously grateful. Nanny is intelligent, authentic, empowering, insightful and she is wonderful at listening and guiding me as I navigate my way through therapy!
