As an existentially oriented psychotherapist with 25 years of experience treating a range of people in a variety of settings, I work most effectively with people who are open to mindfulness and other spiritual modalities. We will work together to create an alliance as we negotiate life's inevitable challenges by establishing empathy and understanding while maintaining a strategic and solution-focused stance. Most recently, I have been influenced by Internal Family Systems therapy and have found this a useful adjunct to my practice. I draw on a significant number of resources in my work with my clients. This will include poetry, art, music, philosophy, spiritual teachings, and literature. An openness to art and other wisdom/learning traditions can assist patients with growth as well as the normalization of the human struggle.
Ideally we will come together in an encounter between two human beings. I will explain my basic orientation, discuss diagnoses, and outline a course of potential treatment.
I read and study deeply, and thus consider myself a student of the universal human question. I am open to learning from my patients, and consider psychotherapy to be a transactional and symbiotic process.
If you are struggling with a sense of being misunderstood, by a partner, or by the world, we can work together to understand how your particular experience can be re-framed and applied to other contexts or settings where these challenges are transformed into strengths. I work best with clients who have at least some spiritual awareness or curiousity, and who engaged in or are open to developing a mindfulness practice. I used guided mediation at times, so I work most effectively with clients who are open to that. I am interested in right and left hemisphere difference and the current deficit of right-brain modes of knowing existing in our culture. I seek an alliance that integrates the intellect with the intuition.

Very insightful and easy to talk to. My first meeting with Newell went very well and I plan on having a follow up.
