Joshua Boyce
Hello and welcome! I am a licensed clinical social worker seeing clients in the states of Illinois, Colorado and Massachusetts. I am a graduate of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis' Master of Social Work program and have been providing psychotherapy to adults since 2016. I have extensive experience in working with people who are struggling with depression and anxiety, as well as life transitions and recovery from traumatic experiences. I use evidence-based therapy approaches including CBT, DBT, and ACT to help you build skills that can change your trajectory, and EMDR to clear out any old, painful experiences that are keeping you from achieving your true potential.
First session
Our first few sessions will be dedicated to getting to know one another, understanding your treatment needs, and developing a plan to get you to where you need to be. My hope is that by the end of our first session, you will feel seen, understood, and hopeful.
Strengths
I excel at creating a warm, nonjudgmental space in which clients can work through the hard stuff that brings them to therapy. Whatever your concerns may be, rest assured that I will engage with you in a respectful and sensitive manner and do my best to help you move towards the life that you envision for yourself.
Ideal clients
I do my best work with people who are introspective and able to turn inward and observe and identify their thoughts, feelings, and body sensations. In my work with clients, I use evidence-based therapy approaches including CBT, DBT, and ACT to help you build skills that can change your trajectory, and EMDR to clear out any old, painful experiences that are keeping you from achieving your full potential. These approaches can be customized to meet your unique therapy needs.
Treatment methods
EMDR
I was trained in Somatic and Attachment-Focused EMDR in 2020. I use this treatment approach to help people recover from traumatic experiences, depression, anxiety, and other concerns. The wonderful thing about EMDR is that you only have to identify a few of the important details about the tough experiences you've been through, rather than telling the whole story from beginning to end.
Somatic
I use somatic/body-based/mind-body methods in my work with clients, including visualization, progressive muscle relaxation, breathwork, and other techniques. These can help you learn more about about yourself, what you want and need, and where you want to go in life.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
I believe that mindfulness is a way to step outside of your everyday experience of yourself and your life so that you can open up to new ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
The way we think about ourselves and the things that are going on in our lives has a significant impact on how we feel and behave. In the words of the Buddha, "We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world."
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
ACT is a third wave cognitive behavioral therapy that focuses on six core processes that can completely change how you experience yourself, your relationships, and your life. In some ways, it's similar to traditional CBT, but in others, a very different experience. This approach focuses on changing your relationship to your inner experiences, rather than directly changing your thoughts and feelings.
