About
Hello and welcome. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Arizona. I provide general mental health counseling for teens (13+) and adults with a specialization in treating Substance Use Disorders (SUDs). While you don't need to have a substance use issue to see me, I do have personal experience navigating those challenges. While my approach to treatment is eclectic based on individual needs, I generally employ interventions from CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing. I received my BA in Literature from the State University of New York in 1995 and my MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from University of Phoenix in 2021.
I also take a very pragmatic approach to treatment e.g., identifying the most pressing issue(s) and presenting tools to bring emotional effects back to baseline.
First session
My job during an intake is threefold: observe, ask good questions, and listen. From there we'll determine if I can help you, if we're comfortable working together, and then schedule our next session.
Strengths
Personal experience with anxiety, depression, family-of-origin issues, and long-term recovery from substance use - along with a solid sense of humor - have served me and my clients well. I also take a very pragmatic approach to treatment e.g., identifying the most pressing issue(s) and presenting tools to bring emotional effects back to baseline. From there we take a deeper exploration of causes and conditions.
Ideal clients
I work with teens and adults with an array of clinical presentations. Counseling teenagers as they transition from middle school to adulthood has proven both challenging and rewarding; counseling older adults dealing with personal and professional stressors (like kids and divorce) has had similar impact. Since I have personal experience with addiction and recovery, I am always apt to treat those with Substance Use Disorders and/or Process Addictions (gambling, compulsive sexual behavior, etc.)
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I am of the firm belief that everyone possesses the inherent capacity for positive change, but change is difficult, overwhelming, and sometimes frightening. CBT allows you to divorce yourself from distorted thinking, positively impacting your relationships and your overall mental health. Your brain is the biggest challenge you'll face today. You can learn to love it again.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
As a clinician, my goals are to observe, listen, and ask good questions as this is your treatment, not mine. I don't have any agenda other than determining if and how I can help. There is no judgement. I'm not the cops, a member of the cloth or anyone's moral barometer. I am an independent neutral third-party...kind of like Switzerland.
