About me

I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in California and Arizona. After more than 30 years as an educator, minister, counselor, and consultant; I realized that the one thing I am most passionate about is working one-on-one with others – watching them discover clarity, restoration, hope, and passion. Psychotherapy is the single endeavor where I get to bring all that I am to all that I do.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

It is critical that we both understand that my goal is to simply help you achieve yours. Our course of treatment is established on your values and vision of your best self. I'm on your agenda. You are not on mine. In order for me to best serve you, I need to do my best to understand you. I want to see, hear, and know you as best as I possibly can. Our first session is all about establishing safety, trust, then understanding.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

With over 25 years of practical experience, I take great care to balance compassion with insight throughout every session. While I believe that each client has unique experience, there are often some common patterns of challenges. My role is to help them discover and leverage their greatest strengths in light of these challenges — leading to healing, recovery, restoration, and growth. A former tenured professor of clinical and organizational psychology, I taught graduate courses such as Clinical Foundations; Psychopathology; Addiction Counseling; Research Methodology; Psychosocial Stressors in Mental Health; Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality; Career Development; Behavior and Psychology in Organizations. I have also taught at Pepperdine University, and still teach at Concordia University.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My clients include (a) individuals navigating the difficult transitions of life; (b) professionals struggling to navigate the dynamics of their careers and the resulting impact on their personal lives; and (c) individuals struggling to escape cognitive distortions that proliferate unhealthy conflict, anxiety, and/or depression.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I help clients discover their cognitive distortions, which disempower their thinking, feelings, behaviors, and negatively impact their relations with others.

Strength-Based

Utilizing inherent strengths (unnoticed and/or forgotten), clients can often discover solutions to life's difficulties based on their own unique experience-based strengths and internal motivations.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

If I simply give advice (telling you what I think you should do) I am likely disempowering you - which creates self-doubt and often reinforces perceived helplessness. Working collaboratively, you can discover your strengths and personal sense of agency, empowering you to thrive.

I've never had a therapist before. Now, after meeting with Doc Andy for over a year, I wish I had one my whole life. Since my father died when I was 9yrs old, I've never really had an authority figure to bounce issues off who is unbiased and can give me answers that I respect and make sense. Doctor Andrew gives me this authority figure. I have kept notes on all our sessions since Jan of 2024. I frequently go over these notes so his insights become part of my sub-conscious. I am grateful for him.

He asked great questions to get to know me, my background, and understand my goals; provided insight on areas of concern and took time to confirm thoughts; and gave me meaningful tasks to do or consider.
