Susan Hoicowitz
I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with a deep passion for supporting individuals and families as they navigate daily experiences and life’s challenges. For more than 17 years, I have worked with adolescents, parents, and families in both individual and family sessions, focusing on substance use, mental health, and the many adversities that arise across the lifespan. I also have a strong commitment to supporting families who are caring for loved ones with dementia‑related conditions. Having personally walked through this journey, I bring a first‑hand understanding of the emotional, practical, and relational obstacles that accompany this disease. My goal is to provide a safe, compassionate space where clients can share their innermost feelings and be heard without judgment. I strive to help each person feel supported, understood, and empowered as they move toward healing and growth. In my free time, I love spending time with my family — both the two‑legged and four‑legged members. I’ve been rescuing and advocating for animals since childhood, a passion passed down from my parents. When I’m not with loved ones, you can usually find me enjoying a good jigsaw puzzle, getting lost in a book, or indulging in a little retail therapy.
First session
During our first session, we’ll spend time getting to know one another. I want to understand what led you to therapy, what you’re hoping for, and how I can best support you. I’ll ask questions about your background, your strengths, and the goals you’d like to work toward. Most importantly, the session will move at a pace that feels comfortable and safe for you.
Strengths
I ’m deeply committed to helping clients reach their goals, and I match the energy and effort you bring to the work. When you show up ready to grow, I show up ready to support you fully. Therapy with me is collaborative—we move forward together. I strive to create a space that feels safe, trusting, and genuinely supportive. I work with adolescents and adults who want to understand how their experiences shape the way they think, feel, and respond. I also help people explore new, practical ways to handle life’s challenges. My background includes outpatient therapy, intensive outpatient programs, and dual‑diagnosis residential treatment. My hope is that you leave each session feeling welcomed, understood, and empowered. Expect active conversation, warmth, humor, and a therapist who appreciates exactly where you are—and is committed to helping you get where you want to be.
Ideal clients
I am comfortable working with adolescents, adults, and seniors. My specialized experience includes adolescent and adult substance use, mental health concerns, and complex client–family dynamics. I provide both individual therapy and family sessions, including sessions with family members when the client is not present. I have collaborated extensively with court systems, including probation officers, magistrates, judges, attorneys, CASA, and Children and Family Services. I also have a special passion for supporting families caring for loved ones with dementia. Having lived through this experience myself, I understand how overwhelming and emotional it can be. I provide a safe, compassionate space where family members can process their feelings, gain support, and learn ways to navigate the challenges ahead.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I help clients explore how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors connect. When someone begins to recognize patterns—especially the ones that feel heavy or unhelpful—they can start making meaningful changes. Through this process, clients learn tools to manage stress, build healthier habits, and navigate life’s challenges with more confidence.
