My name is Dan Cooper, and I have been a licensed counselor since 2008. My path to this work was shaped early on by a year of public service with AmeriCorps, followed by time working in a transitional living program for homeless youth. Watching counselors help young people create meaningful, lasting change in their lives inspired me to pursue this work myself — and that sense of purpose has stayed with me ever since. My approach to counseling is fundamentally collaborative. I believe that you are the expert on your own life and circumstances. My role is not to tell you what to do, but to offer an outside perspective, help you clarify what you want, and support you in taking accountable steps toward your own goals. Together, we work as a team.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Our first session is about getting to know you. We'll spend time gathering some background information, exploring what has brought you to counseling at this point in your life, and beginning to identify what you hope to achieve through our work together. There's no pressure to have everything figured out before we meet. Many clients come in with a general sense that something isn't working — and that's a perfectly good place to start. By the end of our first session, my goal is for you to feel heard, to have a clearer sense of your goals, and to leave with a sense of direction for the work ahead.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Clients often tell me that they appreciate my ability to truly listen — not just to the words, but to the fuller picture of who they are and what they're navigating. I take the time to understand the personal factors that shape your situation before suggesting a path forward. What sets my approach apart is the balance between empathy and action. I'm not here simply to reflect your experiences back to you — I'm here to help you move. I draw on a range of perspectives to suggest concrete steps you can explore, and I hold space for accountability in a way that feels supportive rather than pressuring. If you're looking for a counselor who will both hear you and challenge you to grow, we may be a strong fit.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I work best with adults who are self-motivated and ready to engage actively in the counseling process. Teletherapy, in particular, tends to suit clients who are mature and committed to change, but who benefit from having someone in their corner — someone to help with accountability and to offer perspective when it's hard to see outside your own situation. I most commonly work with clients navigating depression, anxiety, communication challenges, and relationship issues, though I'm well-positioned to help with a broad range of life concerns. I want to be transparent about fit, because the right match matters. I may not be the best counselor for you if you are entering therapy primarily to satisfy someone else's expectations, if incorporating spirituality into your therapeutic work is important to you, or if you're not yet in a place where you feel ready to take action toward change. There's no judgment in any of that — it simply means another counselor may serve you better.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive-behavioral therapy has been a cornerstone of my practice since early in my career, and it remains one of my primary approaches today. What drew me to CBT — and what keeps me committed to it — is its practicality. CBT is grounded in the present: it focuses on the thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors that are shaping your life right now, rather than spending extensive time revisiting the past. I find CBT to be one of the most efficient and action-oriented frameworks available. It gives clients real tools — ways of identifying unhelpful thought patterns, challenging assumptions, and building new habits of thinking and behavior. For clients who want to understand why they feel the way they do and what they can do about it, CBT offers a clear and structured path forward. My goal is always to make CBT feel accessible and relevant to your specific situation, not like a rigid formula. We'll work through it at a pace that makes sense for you, applying its principles to the real challenges you're facing in your day-to-day life.
