Rachel Kim, Ph.D.
I enjoy working with young adults and professionals who are motivated to engage in therapy to work through life's unexpected obstacles and struggles that can impact our emotional and psychological health. I hope to create a safe therapeutic space built on honesty, trust and collaboration, resulting in meaningful insights and understanding of oneself. There is nothing more important than finding a good fit with your therapist as I believe this is fundamental in building rapport and creating a collaborative therapeutic relationship. I approach the first appointment as an opportunity to get to know your needs, goals for therapy and to assess the potential of working together. I work best with individuals who are motivated to engage in therapy with a positive mind and hopeful outlook.
I hope to work with you and guide you to gain meaningful understanding and insight into your life by making positive changes that promote emotional and physical health.
I received my Ph.D from Columbia University and completed my clinical training at Stanford University. * At this time, I do not treat any self-harming behaviors or thoughts, active substance use or history of psychiatric hospitalization.
First session
The first session is an opportunity to do 2 things: 1) to determine whether we would be a good fit in starting treatment together and 2) to spend time getting to know you in order to better understand struggles and goals for therapy
Strengths
One of my greatest strengths as a provider is creating a safe, therapeutic relationship built on mutual trust, openness and collaboration. I believe this serves as the foundation in exploring difficult or painful feelings, identifying areas of growth and making lasting changes outside of the therapeutic space that will hopefully lead to notable growth and progress.
Ideal clients
I work best with high-functioning, young adults and professionals (ages 18-45) who are motivated to engage in therapy to gain valuable insight into who they are and how they can make meaningful changes to their lives. I enjoy working on exploring the multiple identities that we hold and how that may impact the way we view, interact and understand our world. In addition, I also greatly value working with individuals who identify as Asian/Asian-American.
Treatment methods
Interpersonal
I use an integrative approach to tailor the treatment to each client's needs and goals with a focus on exploring relationships that may be impacting our lives (relationship with ourselves, our family and friends, partner, work relationship, etc).
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
In my treatment, I also utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy to target negative thoughts and assumptions that may be playing a role in creating and perpetuating your emotional distress.
