Layna Johnson
Hello! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (state of MI) and Psychotherapist. I work as an in-person psychotherapist in California at the federal level. I currently am able to offer virtual mental health therapy sessions to Michigan residents through Headway as well. I refuse to give up my Michigan roots. I love my home state!
You deserve to feel loved, respected, and appreciated by others, but above all, by yourself.
I am a graduate from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor for my undergraduate (BA in Brain, Behavior and Cognitive Science) and graduate (Master of Social Work) education. Go blue! I accept Spartans as clients too, don't worry. (Go green! Go white! 😀) I have over a decade of experience in trauma work, grief, depression, managing psychosocial stress, anxiety, building self-esteem, helping people set boundaries with themselves and others, learn how to own their own space in this ever-evolving world, and so much more! I believe a diagnosis is only a part of a person NOT the person's entire identity. The truth is, we all have problems, some are just better at hiding them. So, no judgement here. You deserve to feel loved, respected, and appreciated by others, but above all else, by yourself. Tell me how I can help and if you don't know, let's figure it out together.
Strengths
I like to be open, honest, and direct with my clients. I'm here to give you the reality of troubling situations you are experiencing while listening and assessing to see where you are when we meet during each session. I like to help others see the world through more than 1 lens/perspective and ask guiding questions to help you feel empowered to make your own life decisions. I educate my clients on mental health/wellness and mental illness, while providing the necessary treatment to help them reach whatever mental health related goal(s) they have in mind.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I utilize this treatment in most of my sessions. I assess thought patterns and beliefs, emotions and its connection to your thoughts, and the behaviors as well. We work together to put emotions with behaviors and thoughts, then work towards behavioral changes. If you are unable to identify the connections, that is okay. That is what I am here for!
Trauma-Focused CBT
I use the treatment for those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, to help with changing thought patterns and beliefs (Stuck Points) that are in your mind as a result of a past trauma(s). I help you desensitize yourself to the impact of the past trauma to help decrease and/or eliminate the reactions you have when triggered by a trauma reminder.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
I use this method to help increase self-compassion and increase self-esteem while helping you reach your self-identified mental health goals. We focus on you as a person vs. your diagnosis.
Motivational Interviewing
Is there a behavior you engage in, but really want to change? I use motivational interviewing to help you do so. I ask guided questions to help you feel empowered to make the decision to change on your own time, in your own way.
Supportive
I had a horrible week. You did? Well, let's talk about it. What happened? I use supportive therapy to give you emotional support while providing tools and skills to help you manage a difficult situation and more!
