You don’t have to keep carrying this alone. Maybe it’s anxiety that won’t let up, a heaviness you can’t shake, or the same painful argument with your partner over and over. Maybe something from your past still shapes how you feel today. Whatever brought you here, you deserve a space where you’re truly heard, without judgment and without having to have it all figured out. I’m David Rothman, a Licensed Professional Counselor offering telehealth therapy for adults and couples throughout Colorado. I specialize in anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, and major life transitions. My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in the belief that real change begins with a strong therapeutic relationship. Together, we’ll look beneath the surface at the emotions, beliefs, and relational patterns behind what you’re struggling with. The goal isn’t only to feel better this week. It’s to understand yourself more deeply and create change that lasts. I draw on psychodynamic therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). That lets me tailor our work to you. Some clients want practical tools for managing anxiety or low mood. Others want to understand how their past shapes their present. Many want both. For couples: Conflict and distance often hide deeper needs for connection and security. I help partners recognize the patterns that keep them stuck, communicate in ways that land, and rebuild a sense of closeness and trust. Therapy with me is a place to slow down, gain perspective, and discover new ways of responding to life. You’ll get thoughtful guidance, honest reflection, and support grounded in where you are right now. Reaching out is often the hardest step. I’d be glad to hear from you and talk about whether we’re a good fit.

First session

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and it's normal to feel a little unsure about what to expect. Our first session is really about getting to know each other — there's no pressure to have everything figured out before we begin. We'll spend time talking about what brings you to therapy right now, whether that's anxiety, a difficult relationship pattern, a recent loss, or simply a sense that something needs to change. I'll ask questions about your history, your current life circumstances, and what you're hoping to get out of our work together. This isn't an interrogation — it's a conversation, and you're always in control of what you share and when. For couples, the first session usually includes some individual time with each partner as well as time together, so I can understand both perspectives and how the relationship is showing up for each of you. By the end of our first session, you should have a clearer sense of how I work, what therapy with me might look like going forward, and whether it feels like a good fit. Therapy is a collaborative process, and finding the right connection matters — so this is as much a chance for you to get a feel for me as it is for me to get to know you. A few practical notes: Sessions are held via secure telehealth video, so you can join from wherever feels comfortable and private. Plan for about 50 minutes. Come as you are — there's nothing you need to prepare in advance.

Strengths

If you’re considering therapy, you probably want more than someone who listens and nods. You want to feel truly understood, and you want the work to actually go somewhere. That’s what I aim to bring to every session. An approach that fits you. I draw on psychodynamic therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and I adapt to what you need in the moment. Some sessions focus on concrete tools for managing anxiety or breaking a pattern that’s been running on autopilot. Others slow down to explore where a fear, belief, or relationship pattern came from, and why it still has a hold on you. The approach bends around your life, not the other way around. The relationship is part of the work. Real change rarely comes from technique alone. It comes from feeling safe enough to be honest, including about the parts of yourself that feel messy, contradictory, or hard to say out loud. I build that safety intentionally, because it’s what lets the work go deeper. Direct, with care. You won’t get vague reassurance that feels good but leads nowhere. When it matters, I’ll ask the harder questions and gently name the patterns I notice, always with respect and always aimed at helping you move forward instead of circling the same ground. For couples, we’ll focus on the emotional cycle beneath your conflict. That means looking past who said what to the fear, unmet need, or bid for connection getting lost in the noise. Once you both see that cycle clearly, it often becomes the turning point. Steady and consistent. Whether we’re working through a hard week or marking real progress, you’ll find the same nonjudgmental presence. You won’t be pathologized or rushed toward an outcome that isn’t yours.

Ideal clients

You don't have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many of the people I work with are successful in many areas of their lives, yet privately feel overwhelmed, anxious, disconnected, or emotionally exhausted. Others are navigating a difficult relationship, carrying the effects of past experiences, or simply wondering, "Why do I keep feeling this way?" I work best with people who are curious about themselves and open to change—even if they're scared, skeptical, or unsure where to start. You don't need to have the right words or know exactly what you need. If you're looking for a therapist who will genuinely listen, help you make sense of what's happening, and work with you to create meaningful, lasting change, we'll likely be a good fit.

Treatment methods

Psychodynamic

Psychodynamic therapy helps you understand the deeper patterns that influence how you think, feel, and relate to others. Many people notice they keep reacting in the same ways—whether it's overthinking, people-pleasing, pulling away from others, or repeating unhealthy relationship patterns—but aren't sure why. In our work together, we'll explore how past experiences may be shaping your present life without placing blame on your past. As you begin to understand the "why" behind your emotions and behaviors, you gain more freedom to make different choices instead of feeling stuck in old patterns. Psychodynamic therapy isn't about spending every session talking about childhood. It's about making sense of your experiences, understanding yourself more fully, and creating meaningful change that lasts. My goal is to help you build greater self-awareness, healthier relationships, and a stronger sense of confidence and authenticity in your everyday life.

Attachment-based

Attachment-based therapy focuses on understanding how our earliest relationships shape the way we see ourselves, connect with others, and respond to stress. If you've ever found yourself asking, "Why do I keep ending up in the same kinds of relationships?" or "Why is it so hard for me to trust, communicate, or feel secure?" attachment-based therapy can help answer those questions. In our work together, we'll explore the relationship patterns that may be keeping you stuck while building healthier ways of connecting with yourself and the people who matter most. My goal is to provide a safe, supportive relationship where you can better understand your emotional needs, strengthen your sense of security, and create more fulfilling relationships both inside and outside of therapy.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps you understand the connection between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Many people find themselves stuck in patterns of overthinking, self-criticism, worry, or avoidance without realizing how much these habits are affecting their daily lives. In our work together, we'll identify the thought patterns that may be contributing to anxiety, depression, or stress and develop practical strategies to help you respond differently. CBT isn't about forcing positive thinking—it's about learning to see situations more clearly, challenge unhelpful beliefs, and build healthier ways of coping. My goal is to help you leave therapy with tools you can use every day, while also gaining a deeper understanding of yourself and creating lasting change.

Couples Counseling

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) helps couples move beyond the same painful arguments and patterns that leave them feeling disconnected, unheard, or alone. Many couples don't come to therapy because they don't love each other—they come because they've lost the ability to feel understood and connected. In our work together, we'll identify the cycle that's keeping you stuck rather than placing blame on either partner. We'll explore the emotions and unmet needs beneath conflict, improve communication, and help you respond to one another in ways that build trust, safety, and emotional closeness. My goal is to help you strengthen your relationship so you can face challenges as a team and reconnect in a way that feels more secure, supportive, and fulfilling.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is based on the idea that we all want to feel understood, accepted, and securely connected—to ourselves and to the people who matter most. When those connections feel threatened, we can become stuck in patterns of anxiety, conflict, emotional distance, or self-doubt. For individuals, EFT helps you better understand your emotional experiences, recognize the patterns that keep you feeling stuck, and develop a stronger, more compassionate relationship with yourself. Together, we'll explore how past experiences may be shaping your present reactions and work toward responding with greater confidence, clarity, and emotional balance. For couples, EFT helps move beyond blame and recurring arguments by identifying the emotional cycle that's driving conflict. Rather than focusing on who's right or wrong, we'll work together to understand the deeper emotions and needs beneath those interactions, helping you rebuild trust, improve communication, and create a more secure, connected relationship. Whether you're coming on your own or with your partner, my goal is to help you feel more connected, more understood, and better equipped to navigate life's challenges and relationships with confidence and resilience.
