Ned Beasley
My name is Ned (he/him), and I'm a transmasc therapist who works virtually with LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent adults. I especially enjoy working with autistic and ADHD adults, trans and queer people, and people building lives, relationships, or identities that don't follow the usual template. I’m comfortable around chronic illness and disability, kink, polyamory/non-monogamy, acculturative stress, and those learning how to set or improve their boundaries.
First session
I take my cues from you. If you arrive with a PowerPoint presentation about your holistic self, excellent, we can go through the PowerPoint. If you have one specific problem you want to address, we can start there. You don't need to know exactly what your goals are before you show up, because figuring that out can be part of our work.
Strengths
I have lived experience as a neurodivergent, queer, and trans person. I can help you build habits, workflows, or new perspectives that make life just a little bit easier, that work with the type of brain you have instead of against it. I am well-versed in creating an accepting and safe environment to be yourself, even if you're not fully sure who that is yet. I can hold space for your feelings, *and* I can help you to explore solutions, perspectives, or skills that might help when you're open to it.
Ideal clients
You might be trying therapy for the first time and have no idea what you're supposed to "do" here. You might have tried therapy before and felt misunderstood or talked down to. You might be newly diagnosed with ADHD or autism, unmasking, exploring your gender or sexuality, navigating chronic illness or disability, or trying to make your life more of what you want it to be. Maybe you already believe pretty strongly in self-acceptance and living on your own terms, but keep running into thoughts like: “I should be able to handle this.” “If I let myself do things the easy way, I'll get lazy.” “Am I really allowed to say no?” “A good partner/friend/adult would do this differently.” You may know intellectually that there isn't "one right way" to have a career, relationship, gender, or social life, but still find yourself feeling that way. I like exploring that with people. Acknowledging where these thoughts may have started (hint: it's not because you did something "wrong"), whether it be your upbringing, cultural messaging, oppressive systems, or all of the above, and finding ways to make space and claim your power despite it.
Treatment methods
Gender-affirming therapy
Gender can be central to our work, occasionally relevant, or barely discussed at all. I can support identity exploration, transition, dysphoria and euphoria, relationships, self-advocacy, and sorting out what feels authentic to you versus what you've been told gender is supposed to look like.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
My practice is DBT-informed rather than a formal DBT program. I borrow skills around intense emotions, distress, mindfulness, boundaries, and communication when they're useful and adapt them to the person rather than expecting the person to adapt to the skill.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
Therapy with me is collaborative. You bring expertise on your own life; I bring training, questions, perspective, and tools. There isn't one correct way to “do therapy,” and we'll check whether what we're doing is actually helping.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
I use ACT to help clients notice when they're stuck fighting their own thoughts or feelings and make choices based more on what actually matters to them.
Narrative
I help clients pay attention to the stories they tell about themselves. “I’m lazy” creates a very different problem from “I’m having trouble getting started.” Sometimes changing the story doesn't excuse a problem; it lets us finally understand what the problem is.
