I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and I love the outdoors and most anything to do with water. I have 25+ years of experience helping people as a clinical social worker. My practice has been primarily geared toward adults, but I also have extensive experience with youth ages 12-17. In recent years, my clientele has gravitated to men's issues.
Besides completing necessary assessments, I just want to get to know you and who you are. I want to see a "snapshot" of your life while working to understand your strengths, support system, hobbies and interest. I often think of counseling like traveling and I am a "tour guide" that you have hired to help guide you on your journey.
I have a great ability to connect with people. Counseling is about creating a healthy connection in an environment of safety. I am aware of my limitations and not afraid to refer a client else where, if that is best for them and their treatment. Therapy, must be about the client, not the therapist. In my counseling, I like to use metaphors to illustrate concepts and ideas. I have developed these helpful metaphors over years of practice and when applicable, I love to share these with my clients. Most importantly, I love to empower my clients. Not only with improved mental health, but with practical skills and knowledge.
My ideal client is an individual who is motivated to change, but may be stuck in the process. I love working with invested people who desire more out of life. I feel very confident working with individuals who are challenged with depression and/or anxiety, but I most enjoy working with clients who are navigating difficult times in life (relationships, employment, general life changes, etc.). I want to work with people who are intent on learning and growing in a positive direction.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I really enjoy working with clients on understanding how CBT works. We will go over a model for CBT, which will help enrich the entire therapeutic process. As part of this, you will understand the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behavior and how to use this in the future to improve your life situation.
Narrative
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) does not work for everyone. In these situations I want to hear and understand your stories. We will process these experiences and add meaning to your life situation.

My first session with Matt went well. I found him to be easy to talk to and I appreciate that he presents himself as confident and experienced in his field. I am new to therapy, but I was able to walk away from this session feeling enthusiastic to continue working with Matt to achieve my therapy goals.

I was nervous because I've never had a therapy session before, but Matt was INCREDIBLE and made me feel comfortable instantly! His empathy and warmth was easy to feel, and he displayed confidence and intelligence when making his assessment and plan. I'm looking forward to working together more with Matt!

Matt has been helpful for me. It’s been a breath of fresh air and I find myself needing more time to talk with him because I have so much on my mind that I feel I need to get out in the allotted time. He’s a good listener and harps on making informed decisions.
