Matthew Gordon
I am first and foremost a lover of people. My approach is authentic, supportive, empathetic, and understanding of the difficulties many experience in life having to manage mental health symptoms, feelings of being alone/misunderstood, dealing with the ramifications of historical trauma and the impact these can have on one's current relationships.
My greatest strengths are my genuine relatability, authenticity, empathy, ability to build rapport, and ability to help people begin achieving therapeutic goals quickly.
My greatest strength is quickly building rapport and focusing on holistic wellness (mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically) and the connection between them. I am devoted to best care practices and excellent service delivery. I align myself well and tend to the immediate needs, desires, and goals of the person I'm working with. I don't believe that therapy is about learning to 'suffer less' but to work towards realizing one's full potential and highest level of functioning, identifying and working to resolve barriers that stand in the way, and developing the ability to trust in oneself, and one's ability to thrive in life. Every goal that is important to my client is important to me.
First session
In the first session I will be getting to know certain facts about your life including: Aspects of your upbringing, parent/sibling relationship dynamics, your work, current household composition, adult romantic relationship history, what's currently going well, your accomplishments, concerns, and current goals for therapy.
Strengths
My greatest strengths are my genuine relatability, authenticity, empathy, ability to build rapport, and help people achieve therapeutic goals. My mission is also to help people work on resolving historical circumstances that may directly impact their current experiences with depression, anxiety, stress, perspective-taking, and to develop an appreciation for and understanding of the role that healthy boundaries play in fostering sound mental health. I am experienced in helping people to address unhealthy relationship dynamics and stressors within one's work or family environment. I consider the most important relationship one will have in life is with oneself and I was drawn to the social work profession because I wanted to do my part in contributing to the change in the world we all know is possible.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who desires to heal, grow, learn, find empowerment, and thrive. This may be someone who feels hindered in the process of trying to resolve something in their life and simply needs some additional help. Many people simply need help learning something they may have never been taught. My approach is to meet you where you're at and to partner with you in developing a plan of action to help you get there.
Treatment methods
Motivational Interviewing
This is an Evidence-Based Treatment Modality and manner of interviewing which is designed to help you identify your motivations for change. At times, we know that we desire to experienced something better but may not know where this desire comes from or what makes this important. Motivational interviewing is a means to help you identify and maintain connection with the motivations you have for wanting to make improvements and to work on any ambivalence or fears you may have about it.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
This is an Evidence-Based Treatment Modality which emphasizes the importance of evaluating our thought process as we seek to identify mental processes which are self-defeating so that we can begin replacing those with new, fact-based, and positive ones which will help us to make significant changes in our lives and help sustain them.
Psychodynamic
This Evidenced-Based Treatment Modality is a form that explores unconscious thoughts, emotions, and early-life experiences to understand how they shape current behavior, relationships, and mental health.
