Denise Sortino
Healing Begins with Feeling Safe I believe meaningful healing begins when we feel safe enough to be ourselves, without judgment, pressure, or expectations. My goal is to create a warm, compassionate, and supportive space where you feel genuinely heard, understood, and accepted.
Understanding Your Past, Reconnecting With Yourself, and Creating Meaningful Change
As a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), I support adults navigating anxiety, complex PTSD, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), grief, relationship difficulties, anger, emotional regulation, and life transitions. I recognize that the challenges we experience today are often connected to earlier relationships, attachment experiences, and patterns we developed to protect ourselves. My approach involves gently exploring how these experiences may influence the beliefs we hold about ourselves, our emotional responses, and the behaviors we carry into our present lives. Together, we can begin to uncover the roots of patterns that may no longer serve you, approaching them with curiosity rather than judgment. I integrate traditional psychotherapy with mindfulness, somatic awareness, attachment-informed approaches, cognitive behavioral strategies, and emotional regulation skills. I believe that understanding how our nervous system responds to stress can help us develop greater self-compassion and a stronger sense of emotional safety. I also recognize that anger, anxiety, avoidance, and other difficult emotions often communicate something important about our needs, experiences, and boundaries. Rather than viewing these responses as problems to eliminate, we can explore what they may be trying to tell us. Therapy is a collaborative process, and I believe you are the expert on your own experiences. We will move at a pace that feels comfortable, balancing meaningful exploration with practical tools for everyday life. My hope is that our work helps you reconnect with yourself, strengthen your relationships, and move toward a life that feels more grounded, authentic, and fulfilling.
Strengths
One of my greatest strengths is my ability to look beyond the immediate concern and help clients recognize the deeper patterns influencing their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I bring years of clinical experience, a strong intuitive awareness, and an ability to recognize what may be happening beneath the surface. My approach is integrative and flexible, drawing from evidence-based psychotherapy, mindfulness, somatic techniques, and an understanding of how the nervous system responds to stress. I recognize that insight alone doesn’t always create change, which is why I incorporate practical strategies that help clients apply what they’re discovering in their everyday lives. I also bring a balance of gentle exploration, thoughtful reflection, and humor when appropriate. I don’t believe therapy needs to follow a rigid formula. I tailor our work to each person’s unique needs, helping them connect the dots, discover new perspectives, and build meaningful, lasting change.
Ideal clients
I enjoy working with adults who are curious about themselves and interested in understanding the patterns, experiences, and relationships that have shaped their lives. You don’t need to know exactly what you want from therapy or where to begin. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or simply seeking a deeper understanding of yourself, we can explore that together, at your own pace, with openness, compassion and building trust within the therapeutic relationship.
Treatment methods
Attachment-based
I use attachment-based therapy because our earliest relationships often shape how we see ourselves, connect with others, and respond to emotional challenges. Exploring these patterns helps us understand present-day behaviors, beliefs, and relationship dynamics. This awareness creates opportunities to develop healthier connections, greater emotional security, and a more compassionate relationship with ourselves.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
I incorporate mindfulness-based therapy to help clients become more aware of their thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations without immediately reacting to them. By learning to slow down and notice what is happening in the present moment, clients can strengthen emotional regulation, reduce stress, and respond to life’s challenges with greater intention and self-compassion.
Psychodynamic
I use psychodynamic therapy to explore how past experiences, unconscious patterns, and unresolved emotions influence our present-day thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. By bringing these connections into awareness, clients can better understand themselves, recognize recurring patterns, and begin making meaningful changes that support emotional growth, healthier relationships, and a stronger sense of self.
