Sometimes it feels like the actual apocalypse is just around the corner. We are bombarded with terrible headline after terrible headline. Inflation is making it harder to pay the bills, let alone have fun, or reach our dreams. With so much going on in the world, it’s no wonder that there are greater rates of anxiety and depression! In the midst of it all, you might be trying to figure out who you are, what you want from life, how to have that honest conversation with your friend, setting boundaries with a parent, whether to switch jobs, learning to be more comfortable in your skin, etc. It’s a lot to manage. I can help. I am a licensed psychologist and consider myself a generalist with a wide variety of clinical interests including issues related to family of origin, self esteem, identity development, issues related to oppression and marginalized identities, depression, anxiety, stress, and interpersonal relationships.
During our first meeting, I will work hard to build a strong foundation for our work together. I am eager to get to know you and support you, and so I will start by asking you a whole lot of questions. We will collaborate to identify some goals. I will invite you to share about the things that have brought you to therapy, your past experiences, and important salient aspects of your identity and who you are as a person. Of course, you get to determine what you feel comfortable sharing, and if there are things that you don't quite feel like talking about in the beginning, that is totally fine! I know that trust and safety are important in therapy, and sometimes they take a little time to build. After our first meeting, you will likely be taking the lead more and determining what we discuss! With teamwork, we will get you moving toward your goals!
I use a warm, person centered, and integrative approach in my therapeutic work. I like to shine a spotlight on a Client's strengths, encourage self compassion, and remind Clients of the importance of self care (yes, even when things are busy). I tend to gently, and sometimes a little more directly with a touch of humor, push Clients toward being more vulnerable, genuine, and authentically themselves. I help Clients gain insight, shift perspective, process emotions, and recognize when thoughts are being mean liars.
I find that I really enjoy working with adults that struggle to reign in their inner critic, engage in self compassion, or identify their strengths. I enjoy helping Clients process family of origin related issues and gain insight regarding how those formative experiences are still affecting them. I like helping Clients more solidly grasp onto their intrinsic value as a person with no need to prove themself or earn love. I work well with folks going through big changes in life or experiencing big shifts in their identity or self concept. I have a great deal of experience working with folks struggling with shame, guilt, depression, anxiety, and self esteem issues.
