Val Capozzi
Life can feel overwhelming when trauma, anxiety, depression, or relationship challenges take center stage. I believe therapy should be a space where you feel seen, heard, and supported as a whole person—not just a collection of symptoms. I work collaboratively with clients to help them make meaning of their experiences, reconnect with their values, and move toward a more authentic and fulfilling life. As a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), I specialize in trauma recovery and have extensive experience working with individuals navigating anxiety, depression, PTSD, and substance use concerns. I also work with couples and families, supporting healthier communication, deeper understanding, and more secure connections. Whether you’re feeling stuck, disconnected, or simply seeking clarity and growth, I aim to meet you where you are with compassion and respect.
I work collaboratively with clients to help them make meaning of their experiences, reconnect with their values, and move toward a more authentic and fulfilling life.
My approach is rooted in humanistic and existential therapy, emphasizing personal agency, self-awareness, and the belief that change is possible—even in the midst of pain. I take an integrative approach, drawing from evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), grief work, and solution-focused interventions, tailoring treatment to each client’s unique needs and goals. Healing is not about “fixing” yourself—it’s about understanding yourself more deeply and learning new ways to relate to your experiences. I strive to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where you can explore challenges, build resilience, and move forward with intention.
First session
During the first therapy session, I focus on establishing therapeutic rapport and building trust with the client. I work to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel heard, seen, and comfortable sharing their experiences. I also look for client buy-in by collaborating with them on their goals for therapy and helping them feel actively involved in the therapeutic process. In the initial session, I gather relevant background information, explore presenting concerns, assess strengths and coping strategies, and begin identifying areas the client would like to work on. My approach emphasizes empathy, authenticity, and collaboration to help foster a strong therapeutic alliance from the beginning.
Strengths
What stands out about my therapeutic approach is my ability to integrate evidence-based interventions with a compassionate, person-centered foundation. I primarily utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness-based techniques, solution-focused interventions, and strengths-based approaches while grounding my work in an Existential Therapy and humanistic lens. I aim to help clients better understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and lived experiences while also supporting them in finding meaning, authenticity, and personal empowerment. My therapeutic style is collaborative, empathetic, and nonjudgmental, allowing clients to feel safe, heard, and actively involved in the therapeutic process. I incorporate mindfulness and grounding techniques to support emotional regulation and present-moment awareness, while solution-focused and strengths-based methods help clients recognize their resilience, build on existing strengths, and work toward achievable goals. Through this integrative approach, clients often develop increased self-awareness, healthier coping strategies, improved emotional regulation, and greater confidence in navigating life challenges. I strive to help clients feel empowered, supported, and capable of creating meaningful and lasting change.
Ideal clients
I work with individuals, couples, and families who may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or emotionally exhausted. Many of my clients are navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, major life changes, or the stress of trying to balance work, family, and personal responsibilities. My goal is to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where you can feel heard and understood. Together, we’ll explore the challenges you’re facing, build healthy coping skills, strengthen relationships, and work toward meaningful growth and healing at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
My experience with CBT involves helping clients identify unhelpful thought patterns and replace them with more balanced and realistic thinking. I use interventions like thought challenging, behavioral activation, Psychoeducation in order to provide clients with knowledge on the principles of CBT, coping skills training, and homework assignments to support behavioral and emotional change.
Trauma-Informed Care
My practice is grounded in the principles of Trauma-Informed Care, prioritizing safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. Recognizing that trauma can profoundly shape how we perceive ourselves and navigate the world, I do not ask 'what is wrong with you,' but rather seek to understand 'what has happened to you.' In our work together, this means we move at a pace regulated by your nervous system, ensuring you retain full agency over your therapeutic process. By establishing a physically and emotionally secure environment, we can safely explore the physiological and psychological impacts of trauma, helping you transition from survival-based responses to a state of safety and connection.
Integrative
Because no single therapeutic framework fits the complexity of every human experience, I utilize an integrative approach to therapy. This means I thoughtfully combine elements from different evidence-based modalities to tailor treatment to your unique needs, personality, and goals. Rather than fitting you into a rigid psychological model, I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address unhelpful thought patterns, humanistic and existential therapies to foster self-awareness and meaning, and somatic-informed techniques to support nervous system regulation. By blending these diverse perspectives, we can address both the immediate symptoms you are experiencing and the deeper, underlying root causes, creating a comprehensive path toward lasting healing.
