As a therapist specializing in systems theory and a person-centered approach, I want to introduce myself and share how I can support family members of individuals struggling with addiction and anxiety. My name is Lainie, and I have dedicated my practice to helping families navigate complex challenges while fostering understanding, healing, and resilience. In working with families impacted by addiction, I approach therapy from a systems perspective, which means I view the family as an interconnected unit where each member's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence and are influenced by others. Through this lens, I aim to help family members recognize and address unhealthy patterns of communication, roles, and dynamics that may be contributing to the addiction cycle. Additionally, I integrate person-centered principles into my practice, emphasizing empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuine acceptance for each family member's unique experiences and perspectives. I believe that creating a nonjudgmental and supportive space is essential for promoting open dialogue, trust, and collaboration within the family system. For family members of individuals struggling with anxiety, I use systems theory to explore how anxiety impacts the family as a whole and how family dynamics may contribute to or alleviate anxiety symptoms. By helping family members understand the interconnected nature of their experiences, we can work together to identify strengths, coping strategies, and communication skills that promote a healthier and more resilient family system. Overall, my approach combines the systemic understanding of family dynamics with the person-centered focus on individual experiences and needs. I strive to empower family members to communicate effectively, set boundaries, support each other, and navigate challenges with compassion and resilience. Together, we can create a therapeutic journey that promotes healing, growth, and positive change within the family system.

Hey there! :) I'm a Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervisory distinction (LISW-S) based in central Ohio. I received my MSW from The Ohio State University and have been practicing for a decade. I began my career working as a trauma specialist for children in Treatment Foster Care and adoptions in inner city Columbus as well as my second job working in Worthington, Ohio for a private agency helping children, young adults, and families create balance in their homes and in their lives. I quickly developed a love of helping parents manage feelings related to stressors of infertility, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and parenting. My passion is helping women identify strengths, barriers, and struggles to achieve their full potential. Connecting with people from all walks of life has been a joy throughout my years in this field. I have experience in urban, suburban, and rural areas with my current practice and hometown based in the Appalachian foothills of Ohio. I'm an animal lover, lover of plants, and lover of humans.

I have been told, “you are not a typical psychologist,”. I take this as a compliment. It actually was one of my goals when starting out in wanting to do this work. After going through a year in which I suffered a traumatic brain injury and the loss of both of my grandmothers, I sought help. The problem was, I did not feel as if the person sitting on the other side of the room could possibly imagine what I was going through. When I finally did find a psychologist who I did believe could imagine what I went through, she died right when we had started to make some real progress. Although I suffered the brain injury, it affected me so much more physically than mentally. I made a decision to get my advanced degree in psychology and strive to bring my life experiences and knowledge together in order to help people. I work best with veterans and people with disabilities I have worked very successfully with people that have suffered brain injuries as I can, more than imagine but no exactly what you have gone through. I pride myself on being an insight, oriented psychologist. This means my own insight, as well as gaining insight into what my clients have gone through over the years. In the past 10+ years, I have worked fwith thousands of clients with many different cultural backgrounds. I have worked well with victims of domestic violence, human trafficking, cults, kidnapping, refugees, as well as 9/11 and mass shooting survivors. Although I have not experienced a lot of those things personally, after working with these clients, I do have some insight into what they went through.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Ohio rather than a city like Columbus?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Ohio from Cincinnati to Cleveland! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Ohio.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on Foster Care/Adoption?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need. For example, your selected specialty, Foster Care/Adoption, is filtering therapists in Ohio that work with patients with similar concerns.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
