Hello, my name is Khiana Simmons, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I graduated with a Masters in Social Work from The Catholic University of America. I have been practicing therapy for six years. Currently, I am a grief counselor and have been focusing on helping clients navigate life without their loved ones presence on earth. I have worked in hospital settings, hospice, schools, and private practice.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session, we will focus on building rapport with one another. This is an important step in the process, as it will set the foundation of the work we will complete together. We will discuss challenges you are facing, and we will set measurable goals that you would like to work on to improve the symptoms that you are experiencing.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I utilize a strengths-based approach. Each client has internal strengths and resources. We will focus on your strengths rather than your weaknesses. I use evidence-based techniques that will allow you to notice changes in how you show up in your world. Seeking therapy can be difficult and you may not know what to expect. I will provide you with a safe space to share your life experiences and troubles. My goal is for you to leave each session feeling seen and understood.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have been using CBT in practice for the past six years. CBT will allow you to see how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are intertwined. We will use that awareness to change your thinking patterns and behaviors that are not helpful to you.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness is a practice that I have enjoyed using for the past six years. We cannot change what happens in our worlds, but we can practice and change how we respond. Clients benefit from self regulation and learning how to calm their nervous system.

Grief Therapy

I have been a grief therapist for the past four years. Grief is unique and while there are common symptoms, we all will experience grief differently. As a grief therapist, I will help you process your loved ones death, acknowledge the hurt that comes with death, but also highlight the meaningful experiences you've shared with their loved one, and find ways to view your life with purpose after your loved one has left you physically.
