Want to lose weight or otherwise improve your metabolic health? Feeling stuck, unmotivated, and/or stressed? I have very specialized experience helping people with lifestyle change. Change can be hard. I will help motivate and prepare you to make changes in your life toward improved overall well-being. For nearly 20 years, I've been practicing, researching, and teaching behavioral medicine, always with a focus on the relationship between mental health and physical health. Together, we will explore various ways you can improve your overall well-being, but the road you choose is ultimately up to you.
Just as is the case any time you see a new healthcare provider, I will ask you a bunch of questions about you, your life, your family/background, recent events in your life, mood and symptoms, and your goals for therapy.
Honest, genuine, goal-oriented, pragmatic, open to and curious about various views/opinions.
My PhD training primarily centered around CBT and I use its components to some extent with everyone I see, depending on their problems and goals. Together, we discuss the client's often-maladaptive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and how we can create change in one of these factors so as to change the others and improve overall well-being.
Sometimes - or often - we do need to tolerate and endure distressing thoughts and feelings, while still staying focused on and moving toward healthy goals. ACT provides a great framework for how to do this.
Similarly, DBT is a great approach for distress tolerance, increased awareness/mindfulness of our thoughts and feelings, and helps with assertive communication and establishing healthy relationships.
All of us have experiences that shape the way we perceive ourselves, others, and events around us. Sometimes very distressing experiences can result in us having dominant perceptions that are maladaptive for us and serve as barriers toward our own well-being. Schema therapy helps you to understand how earlier life experiences may continue to adversely affect you.
I maintain unconditional positive regard for my clients throughout the therapy process. Another important aspect of person-centered therapy is recognizing that you, the client, are in charge of your life. I can help you explore how to improve your well-being, but ultimately, the road you take is up to you.
