Hi. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Virginia. I received my Masters in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1986 and have been licensed in the state of Virginia since 1995. I have 30+ years of experience working in the mental health and rehabilitation fields. I have worked with a broad range of clients. I like to help my clients navigate through difficult situations and life transitions. I like to help my clients recognize strengths that they already possess and how they can use these strengths to address their difficulties and challenges. These challenges might include losing a loved one, changing jobs, divorce, aging, chronic illness, disability, or other major life changes. I help clients identify barriers to successfully navigating through their difficulties and gain the skills needed to get to the place that they want to be.
In the first session we will spend some time getting to know one another. We will identify why you are seeking counseling at this time and the challenges you are facing as well as some of the changes that you are looking to make while working together. I will give you an overview of my counseling style and how I like to work with clients including what you can expect of me. This will help determine if we are a good match. Next we will establish a tentative plan together and identify some goals to begin working on. I will answer any questions that you might have. Finally, we will discuss a schedule that will work best for you and get your next appointment on the books.
I am a very empathic and compassionate counselor. I am a good listener. I form strong bonds and working relationships with my clients very quickly. I work very hard for my clients. I have 30+ years of experience in the field and have extensive knowledge of counseling strategies and techniques. I have worked with a broad range of clients of all ages and backgrounds in a variety of situations.
I like to help my clients discover their strengths and positive attributes that can help them navigate through difficult situations and life events. My approach helps folks discover what they are capable of doing vs focusing on what they cannot do. I believe that we can build on the strengths that we already possess and use these strengths to get through a tough situation and find a solution that can move us forward in the right direction.
Losses in life are inevitable. I have experience helping people deal with their losses in a healthy and productive way. We will navigate our way through the grief process together. You will learn helpful ways to cope with your loss. I have helped people deal more effectively with the loss of a loved one (including a pet), divorce, loss of a job, chronic illness or disability, or other major life transitions, just to name a few.
Sometimes there are changes that need to be made in our lives but we are ambivalent, resistant, and lack the motivation to make these changes. Examples could be addiction, weight loss, toxic relationships and job dissatisfaction to name a few. I help folks discover the barriers to positive change and help them develop the confidence , skills, and motivation needed to successfully make the changes needed to meet their goals and improve their lives.
