Hello, I am Dr Lisa Tonnessen. I have been working as a Counseling Psychologist in Connecticut for over 20 years. I am warm, empathetic, gentle and supportive in my approach to helping individuals. I describe myself as open minded and accepting. The goal of treatment is to empower the client with the confidence and skills to help manage and express emotions. I am open to working with teens and adults with issues re: depression, anxiety, life transitions and adjustments.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together, we will get to know each other and build a trusting relationship. I will ask questions and follow your lead as to how comfortable you are sharing your history and current needs.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I am a client centered therapist and think therapy should be a dedicated time for you to explore and express your thoughts and feelings. I am open minded and supportive in my approach. I hope the therapy process can be a time to get to know yourself and explore how you can live your best life.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

I enjoy working with teens, young adults, adults, couples and families. I have been working with individuals who are experiencing life transitions and adjustments and the symptoms that come along with changes for over 20 years in private practice. I like working with motivated clients who are eager to live their most fulfilling life and looking for support and direction to achieve their most authentic version of themselves.

My treatment methods

Interpersonal

I provide a supportive and warm approach to deal with relationships and life transitions. I strive to create a safe and welcoming environment that allows clients to explore obstacles with concerns related to anxiety, depression, and/or self-care. I focus on helping clients develop assertive communication & boundaries with themselves and those around them that can help improve their quality of life.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Using CBT to help reshape thinking and find other ways to look at situations can be very helpful for clients experiencing a difficult time.

Supportive

I like to provide a supportive counseling environment for all clients, adults and teens including LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy.
