Julia Shaw
I am a therapist and homesteader. I am from Massachusetts, and live in Maine. I've had several experiences that help me understand the struggles of folks who are adjusting to a new environment. Clients find me down to earth, the type of therapist who likes to laugh and will call you out sometimes.
The ability to heal is naturally present within you, and my job is to remove barriers by providing compassion, information, and humor.
Everyone has qualities that can help them heal, but there are times when the right support can be so valuable. I aim to attune with my clients and for my sessions to be encouraging, clarifying, and empowering.
First session
We will get to know each other a little bit to establish a sense of comfort and connection. We will talk about your struggles, as well as your strengths. We will start to define what you are hoping to change-- for some, this is very clear while for others, it might take a few sessions! And that's ok.
Strengths
It can be hard to come to therapy and lay your problems and emotions out in front of someone you've just met. I take a moment to center myself before each session, so that I can share a calm and thoughtful presence. This is part of the trauma informed approach. I listen carefully to the way that you talk about yourself and others. Everyone has stories that help them make sense of the world and their place in it-- what story are you telling yourself, and can it be adjusted to be more freeing? This is the narrative approach. There may be information that would help you feel less alone, or give you a framework for understanding and addressing your problems. Or I may share coping skills that could help in the moment when you're distressed. These are some elements of psychoeducation that I provide.
Ideal clients
Some of the recurring themes in my practice include: people who have burnout due to massive responsibilities, overwork or caregiving. People who feel like black sheep, or have difficult family dynamics. Those who are dealing with loss including grief, anticipatory grief (loved one is still alive), or loss of abilities. Folks who are exploring spirituality, healing from religious trauma, or navigating interfaith or cross-cultural dynamics.
