Johnna Miska
Hi there, I'm glad you're here! As a Clinical Counselor and Art Therapist, I strive to create a warm, welcoming, and nonjudgmental space where my clients can explore life's challenges at their own pace, and maybe try processing in a new way.
I’m a Registered Art Therapist (ATR) and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), offering telehealth-based art therapy and counseling for teens (13+) and adults across Ohio.
My approach combines evidence-based counseling approaches with creativity when it fits your goals, helping you better understand yourself and move toward meaningful change.
First session
In our first session, we’ll focus on getting to know one another and exploring what brought you here. We’ll talk through a bit of your background including any relevant mental health or treatment history, and begin identifying the goals you’d like to work toward. While this session is more conversational and not centered on art-making, you're welcome (but not required) to share any past experiences with art or creative expression. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions, share any hesitations, and get a feel for what working together and engaging in art therapy might look like for you.
Strengths
What makes my practice unique is that I value the intersection of creativity, research , and social justice. I don’t think individuals should need to choose between therapy that is deeply human or grounded in science— I think they deserve both. My experiences navigating clinical, educational, and arts-based spaces have reinforced my belief that wellness is also inevitably influenced by the communities and systems we all live in and navigate every day. Because of this, I’m committed to creating a space that’s culturally and racially inclusive, where individuals of all identities feel seen and supported.
Ideal clients
While I enjoy integrating art therapy and other creative modalities, our work together can also be more traditionally talk-based if that is what best supports your preferences and goals. Many of the people I work with are curious about art therapy but unsure where to start, and that’s okay. You don’t need any art experience to benefit from creative approaches, just a willingness to explore in a way that feels right for you. I offer telehealth-based sessions to make therapy more accessible and encourage clients to use whatever materials they’re curious about or already have because creativity doesn’t require fancy supplies. I’m best positioned to support teens and adults navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, trauma, self-esteem challenges, or simply feeling stuck or disconnected from themselves. You might be someone who struggles to find the right words, or someone who’s already self-aware but looking for a more expressive, intuitive way to grow. If you're open to slowing down, tuning in, and getting curious, this space is here for you.
Treatment methods
Humanistic
As an art therapist rooted in humanism, I invite clients to explore their inner world through the process of making — slowing down, getting curious, and letting insight emerge in ways that words alone often can't reach. I believe all individuals are capable of self discovery, growth, and healing, and our work will be focused on using our creativity to elicit positive change and meaning-making.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
I integrate Acceptance and Commitment strategies by using traditional and creative processes to help clients externalize thoughts, emotions, and clarify their values. Art-making can become a way to explore difficult experiences with openness and curiosity, rather than avoidance. Through imagery, metaphor, and mindful reflection, clients can connect to what matters most to them and practice psychological flexibility.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
The act of making art becomes a grounding practice, inviting curiosity, acceptance, and nonjudgmental observation of thoughts, feelings, and sensations.
