Dennis Kraemer
Welcome to my practice! I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California and licensed in WA with more than 20 years of experience providing individual, couples, and family therapy. My areas of expertise include depression, anxiety, anger issues, and self-harm ideation and behaviors. I want to get to know you and what might be happening with you that you are seeking counseling for. Many times people come to therapy when they are in some type of distress. Sometimes this is conscious and sometimes not. If you are struggling or distressed for some reason or grieving a loss in life, ( or not sure but something has changed) I would like to see how we can work in therapy. The way we work will depend on the issues you bring to therapy. I have experience with different approaches to therapy including but not limited to HUMANISTIC THERAPY (includes the importance of personal responsibility, and a positive, non-judgmental approach), STRUCTURAL FAMILY SYSTEMS (includes the importance of family structure and healthy boundaries), GOTTMAN (includes helping couples communicate better, resolve conflicts constructively, and create a shared sense of meaning), CBT (generally includes a short-term approach that helps you identify and change negative or unhelpful patterns of thinking and behavior to improve your mood and overall well-being).
Many times, there is a creative element to counseling and many times the counseling can give you more of a sense of purpose for yourself in life.

First session
I want to get to know you and listen with understanding by creating a place where you can share, feel respected and have the possibility to change.
Strengths
My strengths are an extension of my experience in the therapy field working with clients for many years to include patience, flexibility and a compassionate style of relating .
Ideal clients
I see people for depression or worry who sometimes have low motivation , feel stuck or isolated and don't experience joy in things that used to matter. I have worked with a wide range of people including issues of stress/anxiety/PTSD , and lIfe transitions which many times include some type of loss. In addition, I have experience working wth people who have experienced addictions and self harm thoughts. I have worked with all ages and now focus on individual adults and couples. I would like to hear what is happening to see how I may be able to collaborate with you in therapy to understand ways to change things for the better.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Trained with CBT and I have utilized it with Teens and Adults in different settings. It is a way to look at the present situation(s) and connect thoughts, feelings and behaviors to address mostly negative thinking patterns that inhibit growth and use goal oriented ways to address the patterns to move towards positive change. This can help with depression, anxiety, trauma and other issues.
Structural Family Therapy
Trained working directly with families and helped them restructure the family in therapy to assist with better communication and boundary issues. This may include anger issues in a family- Drug/Alcohol issues in a family or death of a family member for example . Currently with individuals in therapy I would gather information about family relationships or lack there of to assist improving client communications and boundaries with others in the present. This method is most helpful when individuals come in with relationship issues that are prominent.
Solution Focused Brief Treatment
I have experience with Solution Focused Treatment and many of the techniques are also used in other therapies to assist clients. This method helps clients to focus on strengths and the positives to start to see other options for the issues they face. This method can help if you are having difficulty making decisions.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
This is used many times with anxiety and situations where there is excessive worry or trauma. This can be used as part of the treatment for anxiety or trauma that has occurred in the present or past. This usually includes some form of relaxation or mind body type exercises.
