Bennie Butler
My name is Dr. Butler (Bennie) and Iam an LPC, LAC and PhD in CO and VA serving those that are dealing with the following: depression, anxiet, bi-polar, maital/couples issues, existential issues (life meaning), issues of faith, addictions, disassociative issues and the Like. I have taught psychology, and plan to again, at the college level and I have been the owner of LoveJoy Counseling for 15+ years in CO and I am now expanding into the GROW platform. I am polite and professional, but fairly straight-forward tending to work with those who are at a point where they understand that change takes some level of challange. In short, I have experience with both theory and the applied science associated with psychology and can draw from both to apply in a professional, non-judgemental, yet honest wayGreat. I am 61 years of age, I have lived in various places around the world and have seen the common threads of humanity throughout.
First session
First session is pretty standard: big picture background and laying out the issues and goals for the ground-work of future sessions.
Strengths
My greatest strengths are age/experience, education, having taught psychology and having traveled the world over. I not only have the theoretical knowledge, but the practical knowledge (application) that often works in the "real" world. The individual remains in charge, however, I might be able to help with a variety of negative paradigms such as facts versus feeling, the idea of something versus the reality, establishment of goals, addictions and underlying causes, values and their role in life, management style, planing for the future, loneliness and the search for meaning (existential paradigms), couples and fighting and issues relating to faith or seeking.
Ideal clients
I prefer to work with client who are at a point where he/she (or couple) are willing to make changes and be actively involved in the processes that inact the change. The client be willing to seperate, or lean to: seperate facts from feelings, completer task (dont worry-I don't do corny), examine there own values and congruency or a lack therof and or they are just willing to try. This can include addictions, mental health issues, just feeling lost, various existential issues (dating, meaning, work, school and the like), familial issues, depression, anxiety and the other myriad of issues which affects humankind.
Treatment methods
Existential
Existential therapy deal with life meaning and the way we seek it. It also examines what is missing and what we might use to seek meaning, even if it turns out not to be in our best interest.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
This therapuetic endeavor isa standard in therapt and simply put examines the thoughts that illicit behaviors. Change the thoughts and associated behaviors and you can change the outcomes.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
This approach, simply put, examines the way things are and then seeks commitment to better outcomes.
Schema Therapy
Schemas are the way we believe things should be. Problems arise when they do not align with the way things are.
Christian Counseling
Christian counseling--(obviously for Christians) examines issues inlight are alongside core Christ centered values and examine how the jusxtaposition of the issues and those vales might need to be better aligned to obtain desired results.
