Imagine this: you are having a seemingly fine day, then a random trigger comes along and hijacks both your body and thoughts. This leaves you uncertain and stuck... Not only are you judging your own emotional response and not sure what to do next, but your body also feels like it’s been through the ringer. You have every intention to cope and work on yourself and are all too familiar with the phrase “I should work on this”, but you are just way too exhausted and aren’t quite sure where to start. Maybe you don't need to imagine this situation because it is all too familiar. I can relate to these very human experiences and can partner with you to change the way you think and feel. Our emotions serve many vital functions, but often prompt a physical response that can impact the way we view the world. By implementing simple evidenced based strategies to your life at a pace that works for you, you will have the opportunity to confront your emotions with confidence and learn how growth happens when we take a step outside of our comfort zone. With over 15 years of diverse clinical experience with a focus on treating Addiction, Trauma, Anxiety, and Mood Disorders in a hospital setting, I bring you a flexible and creative approach that is curated to your specific needs. While I am open and honored to work with any type of symptom presentation, my niche is working with individuals who have struggled with trauma, addiction, and those that have been impacted by addiction. I hope you will consider scheduling an intake with me to see if we would be a good fit for your wellness journey, please check out my booking link. I look forward to meeting you!

If you've never been in therapy before, I know it can be a scary step. Be proud of your bravery. If you have been in therapy before, I'm glad you chose to return. Either way, my job is to help you find your strengths to learn to manage any issues you are dealing with so you can find your peace again. It is a journey and it won't always be easy but it will be worth it. I have been a therapist and a psychology professor for almost 30 years. I have worked with children, teens, and adults, although I have spent the majority of my career working with teens. I enjoy teens. I have a lot of patience for them. I believe in psychoeducation in therapy. I think that it's not only important to understand what you are doing but why you are doing it. Only by understanding both can you make the changes necessary for long-term happiness. I also believe in working on both the present and the past. I want to help you figure out how to make the present better immediately, while also working to understand anything from your past that may have helped lead to any current issues. Working on both in combination will give the most thorough explanation and avenue for effective treatment. Most importantly, I believe in working together. I may be the "expert" but only you know what is working and what isn't. I will ask you for feedback and I will listen to what you have to say. I am more than willing to do phone appointments if you find them more comfortable than video appointments. Just let me know.

My goal is to create a setting in which my client feels safe and supported, and therefore able to re-examine the patterns that form our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. "When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves." -Victor E. Frankl Hello, Searching and finding a good therapist is paramount to therapy success. Above all else, It requires a good 'fit.' I hope a bit of a back ground story will help you with this process. Thank you for taking the time to view my profile but more importantly, taking the first step. Not easy. My name is Dawn and I'm a retired paramedic of 27 years from the Chicago Fire Department with over 30 years’ experience in Fire/EMS service. I graduated with a M.A. in Counseling Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. My school concentration was Trauma and Crisis Intervention. After graduating, I worked as a therapist under Dr. Carrie Steiner at First Responder Wellness Center in Lombard, Il. What a great start and opportunity. Fast forward. I now have my own private practice - Frontline Wellness Center! Why? Demand. Moreover, I'm an advocate to those who serve others. I am devoted and motivated to helping those on the frontline (EMS, Fire, Military/Vets, Correction officers, 911 Dispatch, public safety, Nurses, Caseworkers, States attorney's, Emergency volunteers etc.) Essentially, all occupations that challenge or compromise the mental health, safety and physical well-being of Frontline workers due to the unique job role and individual expectations. Otherwise known as the 'helping' professions devoted to fixing or saving others often at the expense and compromise of personal health and safety. My educational and clinical experience is C-PTSD (complex trauma) and PTST (post-traumatic stress disorders). I treat variety of distressing symptoms and issues that arise from a critical incidence/s or accumulative symptoms from abnormal events and experiences. Those on the Frontline are human! First responders often have a traumatic past that is compartmentalized or buried next to their work related experiences resulting in burnout or PTSD that includes experiencing unexpected disturbing /frightening triggers. Hidden or unresolved traumatic experiences/events including combat /moral injury, childhood abuse, sexual assault, and domestic abuse/relational trauma truly DO matter. However, past or present traumatic events can be processed safely with the appropriate treatment providing a path for hope and relief. My personal and professional experiences allows me to treat other overwhelming life experiences and transitions that can equally exasperate a bad shift, job performance and daily life. The effects of aging and/or retirement, divorce, addiction, chronic pain and job-related disabilities are just a few life adjustments that affect normal daily functioning, including our interpersonal relationships. I truly understand and can help you get you to a better place, a better life, a better - you. Hidden. Wounds. Matter.

In my experience as a counselor, I have had the privilege of working with a wide range of individuals in various settings. I have worked with children and adults in the community, residential, hospital, and educational settings. In each environment I have witnessed the marvel of human potential firsthand. As a clinician I approach people and the work that I do from the belief that people have the innate ability to grow and heal on their own. My personal life experience and my practice have fostered this belief, recognizing that the process may require or be made more manageable with some assistance or a guide, in the form of counseling. Through my experiences I have witnessed the benefits of the human components that aid in the healing process of psychological symptoms that create difficulty in moving toward fulfillment and full integration of the human experience in the lives of many. The therapeutic relationship, authenticity, and unconditional positive regard are components that for me represent the core of therapy. These components create an experience in which someone can safely explore themselves, their experiences, the world around them, and identify solutions to ailments and the "true self" that is often altered by the world around us.

Therapy is a safe place for a client to remove the masks that we all wear and begin to heal. For this to happen, I believe in providing a space of understanding, empathy, active listening, and kindness. I strive to teach people the coping tools they need to not only heal, but have the happy, meaningful life that they deserve. My goal is to support my clients through active listening and helping them reach their goals. There is nothing more exciting than helping people discover their potential, find peace in a chaotic world, and achieve life goals. I believe in teaching people about actual self-care so that they do not have to rely on commercial self-care as an escape from their reality. Most of all, I believe that in building a trusting, nonjudgmental, safe therapeutic relationship where clients can process adverse experiences and move forward, effectively navigating life’s problems.
