Life can present us with many challenges that can be difficult to navigate on our own. My name is Houa Lawson, LCSW. I have specialized training in a variety of behavioral health issues (trauma, depression, anxiety, amongst other issues, including substance abuse) and developmental disabilities. I also have extensive training, experience, and knowledge in crisis intervention. I am a Certified Crisis Worker through the American Association of Suicidology. I received my Bachelor of Science in Human Services and Master of Social Work at Kennesaw State University, where I had served as the Vice President of the University's Social Work/Human Services Dept Advisory Board for 3 years.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together, we'll start with brief introductions, then dive into the specific challenges you're facing. This will help me create a tailored plan for us to work through in follow-up sessions.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I help clients learn to identify and draw upon their strengths to foster hope, healing, and resilience. My greatest strenghts as a psychotherapist include: building trust, listening skills, knowledge, experience, empathy, flexability, authenticity and reliability.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Through CBT, I help clients explore their thoughts, feelings and behaviours and understand how their thoughts affect their emotions and behaviors. I find CBT to be effective for a wide range of problems including depression, anxiety disorder, alcohol and drug use, eating disorders, and severe mental illness.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I find that DBT is effective for people who have difficulty in managing and regulating their emotions. Through DBT, my clients are taught skills to manage intense situations, and improve their relationships.

Motivational Interviewing

Through MI, I assist clients in discovering their own drive and enact positive changes in their behavior. I find MI to be most effective in treating addiction.
