What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

I work hard to make the first session as uncomfortable as possible (just kidding). I will share a bit about me and ask some general questions about you and your presenting issue. How much we push in the first session is dependent on how quick we connect and your readiness. This is a test drive and an opportunity for you to decide if you'd like to keep working with me or find a better therapist (yeah, some are better than me).

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I came into the field with the intention of primarily working with couples and families. Hence, I studied marriage and family therapy. However, my first full time job in the field was at a juvenile justice center. In a short period of time, I became Director of Counseling and Therapeutic Programming at the same center. I found I have an affinity for working with adolescents. My wife says it's because I have the maturity of a 14 year old (I think I have the maturity of a 15 year old). Actually, I think the reason I am able to connect with youth is that I really try to learn about them. Not just listen, but take a deep interest in who they are and what struggles they have experienced. I truly believe it is an honor to have people open up their lives, pain and hopes with me.

My treatment methods

Experiential Therapy

I have studied and practiced Experiential therapy since graduate school in the late 90's. I was also a ropes course instructor in the 90's and it spurred interest in exploring the theory and dynamics of change. I studied and liked parts of many theories of therapy, but experiential ideas have always made sense to me and fit with my personality.

Narrative

I have also been drawn to narrative therapy. However, it is really a type of experiential therapy. Narrative helps us to define portions of our lives and learn to change perspective and outcomes through story. I have found this to be powerful with many of my clients.
