Hi, I’m Garrett Shotwell, and I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. In therapy, my goal is to foster a safe environment and for you to create space in your life. Once there, I believe in helping you tend to the parts that need healing, accepting and integrating so you can feel centered in your authentic self. I also believe in the deep healing power of feeling seen and using the therapeutic relationship as a way to safely practice how to be. Thank you for inviting me in.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In the first session, my goal is to foster a safe environment that will allow us to explore what brings you into therapy. Once established, we will dive a bit into your past, present, and future. I believe in transparency, and in the first session especially, I encourage collaboration and curiosity... Therapy is a relationship, after all! Towards the end of the first session, I will inquire about what goals you'd like to achieve while being in this space.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Some of my biggest strengths as a provider helping people feel seen through unconditional positive regard, and putting words to inner experiences. There can be such power in having your emotions reflected back to you. I'm also pretty good at creating frameworks to complex internal and external systems, which may help you start to make changes little by slowly.

My treatment methods

Attachment-based

Our attachments are the cornerstone of all of our relationships. How we are raised, and the environments we experience, find ways to repeat themselves. I welcome noticing the patterns that arise in the therapeutic space to help inform how you may show up for yourself and all your relationships.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are how we define our human experience. I have a belief that everything matters, especially the way in which we think and talk about ourselves. I use many CBT interventions in every session, with the goal of helping you neutralize and reframe your perspective and feel empowered in the process.

Humanistic

All parts are connected. I conceptualize each individual through that intersectionality and am consistently assessing to notice patterns throughout our treatment together.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I believe you are deeply valuable, even if you don't see it yourself. Therapy is a space for you to come, be seen and loved, and connect to those parts of you that feel unloved. Unconditional positive regard is not only an approach, but a personal and professional value.

Existential

What does it all mean? If you're willing to go there, I love to hold space and find the ways in which our beliefs can be supported within our value system.
