Welcome! My name is Cyndi Peters. I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Northern Illinois, and I work with adult individuals and couples who struggle with Anxiety, Self-Esteem Issues, Difficult Life Transitions, Trauma, and Relationship Distress. I've been in practice since 2006. I earned an MS in Family Therapy from Texas Woman's University. I did my concentrated practicum work with survivors of childhood sexual abuse. I relocated from North Texas to Northern Illinois in 2010 with my husband, children, and 2 dogs. During COVID-19, I took my practice 100% telehealth, which has allowed me to connect with even more people than ever before. In my spare time, I enjoy time spent with my family, reading, sewing, quilting, kayaking, and tending to my veggie and herb garden.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session we'll spend some time together exploring what caused you to consider therapy. We may talk about the family you grew up with, and any struggles you've had along the way. We will also discuss what you hope to gain by doing therapy with me. We'll determine the goals that we will begin our focus on. We'll discuss if you are a "between sessions homework person", a "let's do what we can during our session time person", or a "I just need a safe place to process with someone other than my family person". We'll plan for the frequency of our appointments together, and get the next session booked.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I strive to keep therapy alive and engaging. I enjoy connecting with you regularly and will treat you as the marvelously unique individual or couple that you are. I am not a one-size-fits-all provider. Clients have described me as warm, attentive, and easy to talk to. I consider myself a continual learner and strive to stay current with my research and training on topics that I focus my clinical work on. For example, the language of intimate relationships has changed quite a bit over my years of practice, and I am always in pursuit of clinical best practices for working with all sorts of challenging situations that face couples these days. The same goes for my work with individuals. Who knew that COVID-19 was going to cause such a spike in anxiety and depression in our society?

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Together, we'll use cognitive-behavioral techniques and strategies to tackle the thoughts and feelings about distressing situations in your life. Along the way, we'll be building a toolbox of strategies that you'll be able to use whenever life tosses you a curveball.

Gottman method

The Gottman Method is a widely recognized and researched approach to couples therapy developed by Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Gottman, who are renowned clinical psychologists and researchers in the field of relationships. The method is based on their extensive research and observations of couples over several decades, which has led to the identification of key factors that contribute to successful, long-lasting relationships. Together, we'll explore strategies from the Gottman Method to help couples build and maintain healthy, strong, and resilient relationships by fostering emotional connection, effective communication, and conflict resolution skills. The approach is grounded in the idea that successful relationships are built on friendship and intimacy and that couples can learn and practice specific behaviors and strategies to improve their relationship dynamics. We'll use this approach to conduct a thorough assessment of your relationship dynamics at the start of our work together. Based upon your relationship's specific needs and concerns, we'll explore strategies and techniques to develop the skills and understanding needed to navigate challenges and build a resilient, fulfilling partnership.
