Are you struggling with issues related to depression, anxiety, substance use, trauma, grief, or major life changes? You, like the many clients I've supported over the last 15 years, may be struggling with circumstances outside of your control, feel dissatisfied with the way substances are impacting your life, or are struggling to stay motivated or connected to the version of yourself you would like to be. Using basic principles from common and evidence based practices such as ACT and CBT, combined with client centered and solutions focused approach, I can work with you to help you impact the change you would like to see in your life.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

The space that is created as we engage in a counseling session is truly unique - we get to explore our perceptions of the world around us, our inner thoughts, doubts, misgivings, and hopes and goals for the future.  I am often described as a calming presence by my clients and people around me.  I like that - my aim is to provide a relaxed space where can explore and problem solve what is happening for you. Sometimes that means guided conversations, moving us towards perspectives and insights into what is working in your life and what isn't.  There may be a need to shift perspective or shift some behaviors, but there very well likely is a need to affirm our own experiences and insights.  We all have areas of suffering in our lives. Can we find ways to accepts the now while shifting in the direction of who we truly want to be?  Initially we will engage basic assessment questions as we get to know each other, and then plan around the focus and the approaches that make sense. Sometimes  we will be taking space to process the day, utilizing common CBT / cognitive reframing strategies or ACT perspectives, or maybe experiential exercises to practice and explore relapse prevention or harm reduction strategies.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I have extensive experience supporting include adults with acute mental health or substance use issues, older adults, adults living with chronic health conditions / HIV, and Gay/Bi identifying men.

My treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

I utilize various facets of ACT to support clients in building values into their goals, creating space to connect with challenging emotions in various contexts.

Cognitive Processing (CPT)

CPT can be powerful tool to find ways to gain new perspective and growth coming from traumatic past experiences.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT is a well studied approach to supporting positive change in moving towards mental health goals - however, it can also be counterproductive if not applied appropriately. In our initial sessions, we can explore if certain parts of CBT may be helpful for you.

Humanistic

In the humanistic approach to therapy, we believe in tailoring our approach to your specific needs. This therapy is a service that is offered to you, an individual, so my goal is to empower you to utilize your own potential to move towards the outcome you want to see.
