As a licensed PhD Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years of experience, I offer a safe and understanding space for us to discover the factors contributing to your suffering. Within 2-3 sessions, we should have a clearer picture of where to focus our efforts for lasting change. I have great confidence in my therapeutic approach, but your input is essential. I'll actively seek your feedback to ensure our sessions are tailored to your unique needs and goals. With your understanding of your life and situation, and my compassionate guidance, you can become the person you genuinely want to be.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Expect to feel deeply understood by another, gain a new respect for your vulnerabilities and your strengths, and enjoy growing into a person you respect and admire. Therapy can be a surprisingly enjoyable process. Our sessions will be a partnership, where we work hard but often laugh at the human fallibilities we all share. ANXIETY ~ Like back and knee problems, we humans are particularly vulnerable to anxiety. I have specialized in anxiety-related problems for over 30 years, and as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Science at the University of Virginia, I'm developing free online resources to improve existing methods of treating all forms of anxiety. TRAUMA and/or PTSD ~ Whether due to emotional-abuse, sexual-abuse and/or violence, trauma and its after-effects can be devastating to ourselves and the people we care about. My treatment of trauma continues to evolve along with the research, and because this involves a great deal of trust between client and therapist I'm happy to offer a free 30 minute introductory session upon your request. OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) ~ I enjoy helping people with OCD because it is a particularly painful problem, especially when others are implying that it is a weakness or that you should just "get over it". OCD can create a sense of immense responsibility for the well-being of yourself and/or others. As we work together, you will learn healthy ways to cope with these worries. Prioritizing your own well-being will ultimately benefit both you and those you care about.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

As my approach evolves along with the research, the ability to relieve suffering in shorter and shorter amounts of time continues to be my greatest professional reward.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

While effective treatments evolve, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) remains the most powerful tool for addressing anxiety, trauma, and OCD. I enjoy staying up-to-date on the latest research, so that we can most quickly uncover and reshape the thoughts, feelings, and habits that hold you back. I want to help you become the person you most respect.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Our emotional suffering is almost always intensified by our body's primitive and automatic fear responses. By recognizing these reactions as natural but often unhelpful, and grounding ourselves in the present, we can see them as echoes of the past or current stresses, not as defining truths. Through this objective perspective, we take away their power to capture our attention and control our emotions and behaviors. The result is greater peace of mind and far more fulfilling relationships.
