Do you often feel weighed down by feelings of anxiety, depression or other psychological issues? If you are ready to take charge of your mental health, you've come to the right place. My name is FitzGerald Ajoku, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 10 years of experience in New York City and Chicagoland. I have worked with clients expressing a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, family problems, behavioral challenges, abandonment/rejection, grief, past trauma, and suicidal/homicidal ideations. I have done psychiatric facility, correctional setting, hospital, youth program and veteran work. My counseling style consists of meeting the client where they are in order to foster an environment of acceptance. When working with people, a non-judgemental stance is always utilized. It is my hope to create a safe, authentic, and inviting experience. My approach combines cognitive-behavioral, dialectical behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and solution- focused therapy. Together, we will work to identify your treatment goals and I will patiently support you along your entire journey. I have a history of engagement and service provision to the isolated, misunderstood, stereotyped and or marginalized with cultural sensitivity. From the most challenging situations to those who just want to get back to being their better selves or reach their full potential. You can do this! Change is possible and if you are ready to take that step, I am here to help you move with the spirit of empowerment. Together, we will work on strategies that allow you to address the root causes of your difficulties and cultivate meaningful solutions. I look forward to working with you!

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together, we'll start with a brief introduction, then dive into the specific challenges you're facing. This will help me create a tailored plan for us to work through in follow up sessions.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I am a people person who both listens and communicates well.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I begin by establishing rapport with you and starting you are in life. Where did your trauma road lead? Where do you want to lead in paddling down the healing river? I assess your mindset and look for behavioral patterns in relation to the primary issue to be explored. We will start from the root of the problems and develop techniques to promote mental health and wellness. You can expect to experience techniques that are individually catered to suit you as a human being. Thus, you will be empowered with the best practical tools & skills to help you self manage in between therapy sessions.

Culturally Sensitive Therapy

Many people who seek therapy wonder if they can find a provider who has intrinsic knowledge of heritage and lineage based matters. They seek a therapist with sensitivity, who is comfortable with dialogue surrounding cultural and ethnic identity. My racial trauma and culturally sensitive treatment approach creates a safe space to process and heal. The impact of victimization, marginalization, disadvantaged communities and persons are explored in terms of mental health outcomes. The focus then becomes fostering higher levels of resilience and empowerment.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

From working with veterans, truck drivers, college students, young urban professionals, incarcerated and formerly jailed people, to business owners and retail workers, I have found that mindfulness psychoeducation has been an excellent way for a therapist to assist individuals with incorporating emotional intelligence, mood regulation, awareness and thought dissecting into present and future moments. It helps to reduce anxiety and impulsivity, while increasing assertiveness and self confidence.

Sex Therapy

Address sexual concerns while improving sexual function. Works with individuals and couples dealing with various issues such as low libido, erectile dysfunction, sexual trauma, poor communication and intimacy issues. Overall sexual health and relationship wellbeing is at the center of this non-judgmental stance treatment modality.

Reality Therapy

When implementing the reality therapeutic concept for telepsych interventions, I've patterned my sessions after fitness personal trainers but with a therapist lens. Here we will focus on personal responsibility, accountability and decision making for self improvement with optimal results. Realistic plans and goal setting become the emphasis so that anyone can learn to become the sole controller of their destiny.
