Hi there, I’m Dr. Mills! I am a Licensed Psychologist based in Southern California. I’ve been practicing since 2010 and currently work with clients statewide via telehealth. My academic training includes a PsyD in Clinical Psychology from California Lutheran University, an MS in Clinical Psychology from California Lutheran University, an MA in Counseling - Marriage & Family Therapy from National University, and a BA in Psychology from the University of California, San Diego. I have worked with all ages and a wide breadth of challenges and/or concerns, from situational stressors to severe mental illness. My journey to becoming a therapist I decided to become a therapist after coaching for over 20 years. At least in my experience of working with athletes, I felt there was a large overlap between physicality and mentality. I originally thought my pathway was sports psychology, but through happenstance found my passion in forensics, serving the underserved. Due to a shift in personal priorities, I resigned from the forensic realm in pursuit of private practice in order to reclaim time to spend with my husband and little one.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

My goals for you My approach to goal setting is to understand the client’s hopes for change and collaborate on realistic objectives that will make a meaningful difference in the client’s life. I come from a harm reduction model, where any improvement, even if slight, is a win to be celebrated and a stepping stone to more growth potential. My first session with you The first session will include dedicated time to share the concerns the client is experiencing and explore the various factors that could be contributing to the clinical picture. Then, with this information, work together to develop an initial treatment plan and goals for ongoing therapy together. My communication style My communication style also varies from person to person based on the therapeutic needs. I strive to always be thoughtful and intentional in a way that demonstrates person-centered support, genuine curiosity, exploration of the concerns brought forth, and dedication to the therapeutic goals set forth by the individual.

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

My approach My approach to therapy varies based on the needs of each person I work with, but always includes ongoing collaboration. I frequently use (but not limited to) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, Interpersonal Therapy, Family Systems Therapy and psychoanalytic approaches depending on the presenting clinical factors and what seems to be most effective for each individual.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My client population & specialty focus I have worked in a variety of settings, inpatient and outpatient care, from community centers, non-profit clinics, and transitional living homes to forensic settings such as county jails, state prisons and state hospitals. I draw upon all of these experiences, the extensive education and training, and incorporate cultural influences to uniquely tailor sessions to the individual’s needs, no matter where they might be in their own therapeutic journey.
