My name is Javier Meléndez (he/him/his), a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 11 years of experience in counseling, including 6 years as a clinical social worker and 5 years as a youth and young adult minister. I hold dual Master's degrees in Social Work and Youth and Young Adult Ministry, equipping me with a unique blend of clinical and holistic expertise. I specialize in trauma care, particularly focusing on spiritual and intergenerational traumas, as well as challenges related to sexual identity. I also address accompanying issues like anxiety, depression, existential distress, and intergenerational conflicts within family. My practice is deeply rooted in an ecopsychosomatic framework, where we explore the interconnectedness of mind, body, and environment. I aim to help you become more in tune with your thoughts, emotions, and body to effectively regulate your nervous system, promoting a more mindful, embodied, and connected way of life. As a Puerto Rican/Taino and bisexual member of the LGBTQ community, I offer a culturally sensitive, safe, and affirming space for individuals to explore their cultural, ethnic, sexual, and gender identities. I am bilingual in Spanish and English and have primarily worked with Latinx populations. I'm deeply committed to the belief that reestablishing our connection to nature and the Earth is essential for holistic healing. My approach blends traditional therapeutic methods with innovative nature-based therapies to help you achieve balance, wellness, and a fulfilling life. I commend you for taking this step toward wholeness and look forward to working with you.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

The goal of the first session is to make sure the services I provide are a good fit for the support you are looking for. We will spend time discussing what you are hoping to achieve in therapy and I will share how I approach therapy. If we both feel that we are a good fit to meet your goals, then we can confidently and powerfully start the healing journey together.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

One of my standout strengths is my visionary approach to therapy. I love to imagine future possibilities and create aspirational visions of what life could be like for you. I'm a lifelong learner, constantly updating my skills through books, training, and experiences to improve my craft. I excel at "connecting the dots" for clients, highlighting overarching themes and patterns that bring clarity and cohesion to your therapeutic journey. I also love exploring complex concepts and ideas, often using metaphors to help illustrate your experiences. My work is highly strategic and intentional, always aimed at moving you toward your self-identified goals, even when it may not seem apparent at first.

My treatment methods

Mind-body approach

In my therapeutic work, the Mind-Body Approach is central to fostering holistic healing and well-being. This approach is grounded in the understanding that the mind and body are deeply interconnected, and healing one aspect can significantly benefit the other. My experience with the Mind-Body Approach involves helping clients to recognize and explore the connections between their mental and physical states. This includes understanding how emotional and psychological stress can manifest physically, and conversely, how physical states can influence mental and emotional well-being. In practice, I utilize various techniques that engage both the mind and the body. This includes breathwork, guided meditation, and sensorimotor psychotherapy. These techniques are aimed at helping clients become more attuned to their bodily sensations and learn how to use this awareness to manage emotional and psychological distress. A significant aspect of my Mind-Body Approach is integrating nature-based therapy. This involves encouraging clients to engage with the natural environment, which can have a profound impact on both mental and physical health. Activities like mindful walks, outdoor meditation, and ecotherapy sessions are examples of how I blend the mind-body connection with the healing power of nature. This approach is particularly effective for clients dealing with trauma, anxiety, and stress-related issues. It helps them to develop a deeper understanding of their body's signals and responses, and how these can be harnessed for healing and personal growth. Overall, my use of the Mind-Body Approach is characterized by a focus on the interplay between mental and physical health, using a range of techniques to promote a balanced and integrated sense of well-being. This approach not only addresses specific mental health concerns but also enhances overall life satisfaction and resilience.

Trauma Informed Care

In my practice, Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) is not just a treatment method; it's a foundational principle that guides every interaction with my clients. My experience with TIC is extensive, stemming from a deep understanding of how trauma impacts an individual's mental, emotional, and physical well-being. At the core of TIC is the recognition that trauma is a prevalent and profound factor in many people's lives. This understanding shapes my approach to therapy, where I prioritize creating a safe, respectful, and empathetic space for clients. I am acutely aware of the signs and symptoms of trauma and its far-reaching effects on the individual's life and relationships. In practice, TIC means that I approach each client with an attitude of curiosity rather than assumption. I understand that behaviors and symptoms are often adaptations to traumatic experiences. Therefore, I focus on understanding the whole person, including their life experiences, rather than just treating symptoms. My approach also involves empowering clients. This means collaborating with them to create treatment plans, respecting their autonomy, and acknowledging their strengths. I emphasize resilience and resourcefulness, helping clients to recognize and build upon their inherent capabilities. Moreover, I integrate TIC with other therapeutic approaches, such as mindfulness, nature-based therapy, and body-centered practices. This holistic approach helps clients to not only process and heal from their trauma but also to reconnect with themselves and the world around them in a healthy and meaningful way. My use of Trauma-Informed Care is characterized by a deep respect for the individual experiences of my clients, a commitment to providing a safe and supportive therapeutic environment, and a wholistic approach that addresses the multifaceted impacts of trauma.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

In my therapeutic practice, Mindfulness-Based Therapy is a key component, reflecting my belief in the power of present-moment awareness for healing and personal growth. My experience with this approach is rooted in the understanding that mindfulness can profoundly impact an individual's mental and emotional well-being. Mindfulness-Based Therapy, in my practice, involves guiding clients to become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations in the present moment. This heightened awareness helps clients to recognize patterns in their thoughts and behaviors, particularly those influenced by past traumas or stressors. By fostering mindfulness, clients learn to observe their experiences without judgment, which is crucial in reducing the impact of negative thought patterns and emotional responses. In sessions, I incorporate various mindfulness techniques, such as focused breathing, body scans, and mindful observation. These practices are not only used during therapy sessions but are also encouraged as daily practices for clients. This helps in cultivating a sense of calm, improving emotional regulation, and enhancing overall well-being. Additionally, I integrate mindfulness with other therapeutic modalities, such as nature-based therapy and body-centered practices. This combination allows clients to experience mindfulness not just cognitively but also physically and environmentally, creating a holistic healing experience. Mindfulness-Based Therapy in my practice is particularly effective for clients dealing with anxiety, stress, and trauma-related issues. It empowers them to break free from automatic, habitual reactions and to respond to life's challenges with greater clarity and choice. My use of Mindfulness-Based Therapy is characterized by helping clients develop a deeper connection with the present moment, fostering a non-judgmental awareness of their inner experiences, and integrating this awareness into a comprehensive approach to healing and personal growth.
