I received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Social Psychology from Lehigh University in 2003 and graduated from Columbia University in 2007 with a Master of Science in Social Work. I recently transitioned from medical social work to clinical counseling. I specialize in health/illness, medical education, medical/social trauma, anxiety/depression, chronic pain/disability, grief/bereavement, and loss. I am a thoughtful, sensitive, empathic, collaborative, and hard-working clinician who genuinely cares and strives to make a difference in the well-being of each of my patients. My passion is working with children and families impacted by medical issues and chronic pain. I have extensive experience working in hospital settings providing a range of supportive services to patients diagnosed with acute and chronic medical conditions.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

One goal for me as a clinician after the first session is for the patient to leave feeling heard, respected, and taken seriously. I also anticipate that the patient will leave feeling a bit of relief and a sense of hope that circumstances will improve by working together. I want the patient to be able to envision working together in the future. However, if the patient does not feel a connection or believes for any reason that we are not a great match, it is critical for them to let me know so that we can discuss other support options. I have a reputation for being hard-working, thorough, detail-oriented and sensitive. Additionally, I want the patient to understand that it might take several sessions or more until it feels more natural for the patient as well as myself to feel fully comfortable. Finally, I want the patient to know that if I do not believe I am the best clinician for you after meeting for several sessions, I will refer you to another clinician with a specialty that more closely aligns with your circumstances.

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

I utilize various treatment modalities and theories as a clinician. My practice framework is based on a bio-psychosocial approach. This perspective considers the interconnectedness of biology (relationship of disease and health), psychology (aspects of mental and emotional wellness that relate to behavior) and social factors (interpersonal relationships and community activities) as a framework. This approach is solution-oriented and strengths-based. This framework focuses on an individual's positive qualities, resiliency, independence, interests, goals and environmental resources. I also integrate art therapy and play therapy into my work.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I am particularly interested in the impact illness has on the patient and family from the perspective of mental health, social development, education, and finances. Siblings and children are often overshadowed by the acute medical needs of the patient. Both require age and developmentally-appropriate emotional and practical support related to the patient's illness. Children sometimes regress developmentally and have issues in school with academics, attendance, and behavior. Illness often strains familial relationships because communication patterns change. Parents/caregivers need additional support due to the extra demands, trauma, and loss of employment they experience while caring for the patient. Often, their health and wellness are neglected over time and need attention as well.
