Hello, I am Kim Kanna, a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) currently offering therapy services in Colorado, Missouri and Minnesota. I work with individuals and couples to overcome many different challenges including such things as anxiety, depressed mood, chronic illness, communication difficulties, and overcoming traumatic experiences. I focus on a strength based approach and offer empathy, compassion, support and encouragement. I look forward to helping you on your healing journey!

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Our first session will consist of a brief introduction, followed by a deeper understanding of what challenges you are struggling with, a thorough assessment of your life experiences along with identifying supports you currently have and what you would like to accomplish in therapy. This information will help us develop a personalized treatment plan to address your current needs and challenges and to set some goals to accomplish during therapy.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I offer a toolbox of skills to teach my clients how to overcome and cope with anxiety, depression, boundary issues, communication issues, and other challenges and difficulties. My EMDR training is the gold standard for EMDR therapy, as it was developed by the founder, Francine Shapiro, PhD. I also bring a significant amount of life experience which allows me to offer diverse problem solving skills and differing perspectives to consider. I also encourage advocacy and offer support and resources. The first step is sometimes the hardest, but together we can walk the path towards healing and reaching your therapy goals!

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT therapy is an evidence based intervention utilized by therapists for over 60 years and helps clients learn the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. CBT therapy has helped many of my clients identify automatic negative thoughts and learn new ways of thinking to overcome anxiety, depressed mood, and improve their overall quality of life.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

DBT therapy is another evidence based therapeutic intervention that has been around nearly as long as CBT and is used to teach mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion regulation. DBT therapy has helped many of my clients to calm overwhelming feelings, develop better communication skills, and improve their relationships.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy has been extensively researched, has been proven to help people recover from traumatic experiences and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and has been recognized as an effective treatment by many organizations including the Department of Defense (DoD), the Veteran's Administration (VA), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the American Psychiatric Association (APA). EMDR consists of briefly thinking about a traumatic experience while simultaneously performing bilateral stimulation via eye movements, tapping, or listening to sounds. EMDR has also been shown to be helpful for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, OCD, addictions, and other distressing life experiences. I have worked with many clients utilizing EMDR therapy with clients reporting positive outcomes.
