Hi! My name is Rachel Cohen and I am a licensed clinical social worker with over twenty years of experience. I graduated from New York University in 1999 Since then I have been working with adults experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression and grief and/or who are having difficulty adjusting to challenges, stressors and/or life transitions. By drawing on their inner resources and identifying adaptive coping strategies, my clients are empowered to face their challenges with confidence and strength.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together, we will discuss why you are seeking treatment now and what you hope to accomplish in therapy. I will ask for some background information to give context to your current challenges. I will explain to you the therapeutic process and of course answer your questions.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My approach is supportive, warm and non judgmental so my clients are comfortable sharing their stories with me. My strengths based perspective encourages my clients to recognize their value and empowers them to achieve their therapeutic goals.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy to help clients understand how their thoughts impact their emotions and behavior. Irrational or exaggerated thoughts , otherwise known as cognitive distortions, cause a person to perceive reality inaccurately leading to feelings of anxiety and low self esteem. In my practice, I encourage clients to identify irrational thoughts and replace them with objective ones. This often improves a client's sense of well being.

Psychodynamic

Early relationships and experiences influence our thoughts and reactions to people and events in our lives. Helping my clients make connections between their past and present provides them with insight into behaviors they would like to change. Understanding the root causes of maladaptive behaviors enables my clients to relinquish them for healthier ones.

Motivational Interviewing

I collaborate with my clients to help them achieve their therapeutic goals by using motivational interviewing techniques. In this way, we work together to uncover their talents and skills. By focusing on their strengths and successes, my clients are empowered to make positive changes in their lives.
