Hello, I am Cathy Lipper, and I am a licensed clinical social worker who has been in practice for more than three decades. I received my Masters in Social Work from the University of Chicago, which built a tremendous foundation for me to be in this field for such a long time. I believe that my greatest strength lies in helping people feel at ease when they are seeking help, since in itself, that can be so stressful. I use my personality combined with my knowledge base sprinkled with humor to find out what people are seeking and to help them reach those objectives.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

After introducing myself, I will ask the person or persons what brought them in, and I would listen to what they have to say, let them know that I would be asking more questions today than would be usual in future sessions, but in an effort

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use this method to help people interrupt the cycle of negative self-concept, thoughts and behaviors; I accomplish this by helping them replace those negative, internalized messages with recalling their tangible, concrete successes.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I have been practicing this form of therapy for decades, because it fits most accurately with my own personality. When I meet someone who comes for help, I use active listening skills to hear what the person is saying overtly and covertly, i.e. the themes that they are talking about which direct their day-to-day functioning. I believe that the key vehicle for change lies in the therapeutic alliance that we form, based on mutual trust, acceptance, support, and positive regard in that relationship.

Psychodynamic

For people who have long-standing issues in their relationships based on early family or other attachments or lack thereof, I use this method to understand how that person's current functioning is being influenced by the past.We work together on understanding the way early childhood experiences with parents/caregivers and other adults have informed the way people react, both negatively and positively, in their functioning as adults.

Strength-Based

I have a great deal of experience focusing on resilience, i.e., the way people have been able to develop "survival tools" to cope with incredible challenges in order to function in their current multiple roles in an ever-changing world, both personal and professional.
