Hello, my name is Lana Amawi, MSSA, LISW, CEC and I have over 25 years of experience in mental health across various multidisciplinary settings as well as clinical research. I am an Ohio state licensed Clinical Therapist and Social Worker who has been working in private practice for the last 20 years. Psychological Counseling Solutions was established in 2008 and more recently Coaching & Consultation Solutions. One of Lana's niche populations are the medical and dental healthcare warriors around the world. My multicultural experiences and fluency in Arabic, helped start my career at the Menninger Clinic (Topeka, KS), followed by Henry Ford Behavioral Health, and Arab American & Chaldean Council (both in Detroit). I continue to be Cleveland liaison for NuDay Syria, a nonprofit humanitarian organization based in New Hampshire. I continue to be a resource and advocate for refugee resettlement and offer counseling and therapy for those who witnessed and experienced trauma due to the civil war in Syria. I still have great connections to Syria, as my parents were raised in Damascus and immigrated after graduating from medical school. I still have family in Syria as well as Jordan, KSA, Canada and of course Kansas City where my immediate family reside.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Other than introductions, it is imperative that my new client or patient becomes very comfortable and starts to trust the process. Many times people have tried other therapists with no success. Educating, learning and experiencing my own personality with the modalities that I use in successful therapy are imperative during the first session.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My experience, cultural awareness, my journey personally through issues of mental health.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Utilizing thought restructuring assists in re-routing thought processes that affect behavior. Basically your thoughts affect your behavior and it is imperative that we challenge unhelpful thoughts or irrational fears in order to modify behavior.

Couples Counseling

Couples Counseling is imperative in today's world. Couples are competing with the devastating statistics of break ups and divorce. Discussing expectations of the self, wishlist of the partner, the 5 Love Languages, conflict resolution, affairs, past traumas and family of origin along with personality and cultural differences all affect the longevity of the relationship. Remember the saying, "those who play together, stay together"? Let's get back to playing, learning and discovering each other at any and every phase of the relationship.

Culturally Sensitive Therapy

Various cultures have their own nuances, belief systems, and expectations that keep the traditions and rituals intact. Learning about each culture is imperative, especially to help individuals and couples thrive in their current climate. Without an understanding of the culture, there will not be a complete understanding of the person. Cultural awareness is paramount in my practice.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

Many patients and clients are looking for a more effective way to produce results in their lives. Solution focused therapy gives us the ability to explore solutions being at the forefront vs emotional feelings or reactions. "Spending less time reacting and more time reacting toward the solution", is one of my mottos in SFBT.
