Hi! My name is Nikki Lowman. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in NC. I am an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist and a trauma-informed therapist. I have 6 years of experience. I specialize in working with children, adolescents and young adults (18-25). I specialize in providing trauma-based and client-centered therapy to help clients find peace and serenity in the middle of many storms life can bring. My goal is to always help clients understand that when you cannot change your environment, you change the way you respond to your environment. My approach to therapy is warm, interactive, collaborative and sometimes playful. My goal is to help clients find healing and to give them hope for the future. I believe we can all benefit from embracing our inner child more. I am here to support you on your journey to healing and creating a life worth living.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

During our first session together we will start getting to know each other briefly. After we review informed consent and confidentiality we will dive into what brought you to therapy. In the first session I will also want to get information on your family history, treatment history, school/work history and medical history. We will discuss treatment recommendations as well as treatment goals. I will save time at the end for you to ask me questions.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I’ve worked with children and adolescents for the past 6 years. I have found ways to connect with and get children and adolescents to open up to me. I use humor and play to often connect with them. I provide a open and safe space for them. In doing the work I do I have watched many of my clients transition into young adulthood successfully. I continue to provide therapy to quite a few of them as they trust me to help them through the next phase of their life’s journey.

My treatment methods

Trauma-Focused CBT

I use TFCBT to help children, adolescents and their families address symptoms related to traumatic experiences. Together with the child and caregiver(s) we will work on skills to help the child address and resolve symptoms related to the trauma. I’ve been using TFCBT for 6 years with youth ages 5-18.

Daialectical Behavior (DBT)

I used DBT to help adolescents and young adults who struggle with impulsivity, intense emotions, self-injurious/suicidal behaviors, frequent mood swings, disruptive behaviors, anger outburst as well as other problematic behaviors. I’ve been using DBT for 4 years. With DBT you will learn how to practice mindfulness and learn skills to manage your thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

Play Therapy

I’ve been using Play Therapy for 6 years with clients ages 3-18. Children learn about the world be their environment through play. Using this method children will learn how to express their feelings, cope with big feelings and how to manage disruptive behaviors. Play therapy allows the child to be less guarded and engage in a non-threatening environment.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use CBT to help clients manage a wide range of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety and disorder eating. We will work together to understand how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected. We will identify unhelpful thinking patterns and work together to restructure them into helpful thinking patterns.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

I use Mindfulness-Based Therapy for clients struggling with depression and depressive symptoms. Using various mindfulness techniques you will learn how to non judgmentally observe and identify your thoughts and feelings. Then learn ways to replace negative/unhelpful thoughts with calming and helpful thoughts.
