Welcome, I am a psychotherapist who received my training at the University of Chicago. I work with individuals and couples. I work collaboratively with clients who establish a relationship built on trust, authenticity and respect, which honors personal uniqueness and fosters reverence for one’s life. My practice includes those wishing to address anxiety, depression, grief and loss, spiritual concerns, loneliness, relationship issues, LGBTQ issues, PTSD, trauma, emotional and sexual abuse as well as life transitions and vocational discernment. In the context of a relationship marked by empathy, openness, and a measure of humor, I work collaboratively as a therapeutic ally, supporting clients’ personal healing and evolution. While I draw on contemporary psychodynamic and humanistic perspectives, and skills derived from CBT, ACT, mindfulness and contemplative practices, my approach is essentially person-centered. I also am trained and certified in EMDR from Francine Shapiro's EMDR Institute and in the FLASH technique from Philip Manfield. Being a composer and jazz guitarist, I have spent many years counseling musicians, artists and other creatives interested and involved in the arts. My background in the arts and music in particular, has become a metaphor to what I provide as a therapist since I have found the most beneficial therapy is analogous to the dialogue inherent in music, involving a soulful conversation that opens up new possibilities for wholeness, self-love, understanding, creativity, relationships and personal growth.
In our first session together, we'll start with brief introductions, then dive into the specific challenges you're facing that have prompted you to reach out for supportive therapy at this time . This will help us identify your most important and appropriate treatment goals and establish the best way to achieve them in our work together. You can expect that I will be present with an understanding ear and a compassionate heart with a genuine desire to know and support you.
A strength that I provide is the power of an integrative approach that combines my training and background in depth psychology and person centered approaches, CBT, ACT, mindfulness and contemplative practices as well as EMDR, FLASH and parts work. Having said that, I am continually struck by the uniqueness of my client's story and the particular issues they face. As a therapist and a creative, I work collaboratively to focus our work in ways that honor your needs, style and personal uniqueness. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I bring a compassionate heart, empathy as well as humor and authenticity to our time together.
My experience as a therapist is that first and foremost it is important that a client feels understood, valued, accepted and cared for by me as therapist and ally. While the person centered aspect of my work is an "approach" I consider it more a "way of being" that cultivates authenticity, empathy and trust in our relationship. My training and practice of the person centered approach involved a two year fellowship in person centered therapy at Chicago Counseling Associates, one of the most robust worldwide centers for Rogerian thought and practice. I integrate the person centered approach with compassion focused care and other approaches.
Sometimes events in one's life can be experienced as overwhelming and a challenge to process. I was trained and certified by Francine Shapiro's EMDR Institute in Watsonville CA. I also am certified in FLASH technique with training from Philip Manfield. I incorporate them when appropriate into therapy for trauma, depression, anxiety, relational issues etc.
I integrate CBT, along with DBT and ACT as approaches to assist clients in assessing values and freeing oneself of roadblocks that prevent moving forward with increased autonomy and reduced stress and anxiety.
My experience is that psychoanalytic thought and practice provides a richness and depth that informs my work with clients, most especially when working together to understand and appreciate how patterns develop in one's life with deeper insight, in a manner that assists the movement toward enhanced personal growth, wholeness and self acceptance.
I use various evidence based means (including polyvagal exercises and mindfulness etc.) to assist those I work with (especially with anxiety) in calming one's nervous system to regain a sense of emotional balance.
