Hello! I am so glad you've taken the first step towards bettering your mental health because, let's be honest - starting therapy can be empowering, confusing, or scary, all at the same time. I'm Heather - a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) based in Georgia. I received my Masters from the University of North Georgia and I bring 5 years of dedicated practice to my work. My passion lies in creating a safe and welcoming environment that supports adolescents and young adults to navigate the complexities of trauma, life transitions, stress, depression, and anxiety, empowering them to meet these challenges with resilience and evolve into their most authentic selves.
In our first session together, we'll start with brief introductions, then dive into identifying your specific challenges and goals . This will help me collaborate with you to create a tailored plan for us to work through in follow-up sessions.
In my time as a therapist, I've had the opportunity to work with those experiencing all of the complexities, highs, and lows of life. With years of direct work with individuals facing various mental health challenges, I bring a wealth of experience to my practice. My specialized training and experience in working with trauma, drug addiction, anxiety, family problems, stress, and emotion regulation have equipped me to address a wide range of concerns that my clients may face. I integrate creative and expressive modalities to engage my clients in the therapeutic process.
I utilize Eclectic Therapy, which is a a flexible approach that draws from multiple theoretical orientations and techniques to use the most effective methods for each client. In eclectic therapy, therapists selectively apply techniques from different evidence-based approaches to best fit the client's needs. I often draw from evidence-based and trauma informed treatment modalities such as Person Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma Focused CBT (TF-CBT) Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Polyvagal Therapy, and Feminist Therapy in my daily practice as I believe each individual person has their own unique experiences, goals, and therapy needs.
Feminist Therapy is an integrative approach to psychotherapy that focuses on the challenges faced by individuals, particularly women, due to bias, stereotyping, oppression, discrimination, and other societal factors. In therapy, I utilize feminist therapy to address the concerns of diverse populations, including Black, Indigenous, people of color; LGBTQ+ individuals, those with special needs, immigrants, and refugees. I acknowledge the importance of making the marginalized viewpoint central. I love that utilizing Feminist therapy helps me remain open to the experiences of individuals of any gender, couples, families, and children. Feminist therapy is person-centered, politically informed, and aims to empower individuals, nurture self-concept, and address aspects of social transformation within a cultural context.
Often, many of us have trouble seeing the world outside of a black and white, right or wrong perspective. I have utilized DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) for the past 4 years because it is a highly effective treatment method used in individual therapy. It is particularly beneficial for individuals struggling with emotional dysregulation, self-harm, addiction, and difficulty in interpersonal relationships. DBT integrates cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness and validation strategies to help individuals develop skills in emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness. In individual therapy, using DBT provides my clients with a supportive and structured environment for my clients to explore their emotions, learn coping strategies, and cultivate a greater sense of self-awareness and emotional resilience. This approach empowers individuals to build a life worth living by effectively gaining more autonomy in managing their emotions and developing healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.
I've utilized person-centered therapy for five years. This treatment method emphasizes the therapist's unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuineness, which can create a safe and non-judgmental space for clients to explore their inner experiences. It's very important to me that this approach prioritizes a client's autonomy and self-exploration, allowing you to lead the therapeutic process while the therapist provides empathetic understanding and support. Through this collaborative and client-centered approach, individuals can gain insight, self-acceptance, and personal growth, empowering clients to navigate their challenges with a sense of autonomy and authenticity.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, often referred to as CBT, is a widely used and effective therapeutic treatment method in individual therapy. I've utilized CBT for the past five years and enjoy using this method because it focuses on examining the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, aiming to identify and modify negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to emotional distress. Through structured and goal-oriented interventions, CBT equips individuals with practical tools to challenge unhelpful beliefs, develop coping strategies, and cultivate more adaptive ways of thinking and responding to challenging situations. This approach empowers individuals to gain insight into their thought processes and behaviors, leading to sustainable positive changes and improved emotional well-being.
