Lucía is a holistic psychotherapist who has spent the past decade dedicated to the study and practice of psychology and mental health, resulting in three master’s degrees in these areas. Passionate about empowering individuals to reach their full potential and achieve a state of mental and emotional wellbeing, Lucía takes a strength-based, holistic approach in her work with clients, which integrates Western, evidence-based practices grounded in science with more spiritually minded Eastern practices. She is originally from Madrid, Spain but grew up in a bicultural home and has lived in New York for over a decade. She is sensitive to the cultural elements that influence our experiences.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

During a first session, I will focus on making you feel comfortable and building an environment that feels safe for you to open up. I will have a list of questions to facilitate getting to know you better and that can assist you in identifying and sharing your main challenges and goals for therapy.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I consider that some of my strengths as a provider are being non judgemental, compassionate, balancing meeting clients where they are with encouraging them to change and challenging them when needed. Because I was exposed from an early age to multiple cultures I developed the ability to view things from multiple perspectives.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

Clients presenting with anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, phobias or going through life transitions. I see adolescents and adults.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT is considered one of the gold standard treatments for a wide range of mental health challenges, which is why it's one of the main methods I have used since I started working with clients. It focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviors and is based on the idea that how people think and interpret external events affects how they feel and behave. My goal is to provide practical tools to clients so they can use them for the rest of their life when challenges come up. CBT offers numerous skills I educate my clients on and often share homework to reinforce the learning.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

ACT is another form of evidence based treatment method that builds on CBT but rather than focusing on changing your thoughts, it encourages you to change your relationship to them. It also puts a great focus on identifying your values so that you can use them as your guiding compass and take values based actions and live a more aligned and meaningful life. A core component of ACT is mindfulness, which helps you learn to live in the present and not identify with your thoughts and feelings.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

DBT is a form of therapy used for people who have intense emotions and often engage in impulsive behaviors. They tend to think and act in an "all or nothing", "black or white" extreme type of way. One of the core principles of DBT is to help people find a balance between accepting their reality and focusing on changing it. DBT also has a focus on developing mindfulness skills and interpersonal assertive communication skills to help people maintain healthy relationships.

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP)

ERP is an evidence based therapy that is mostly used for clients presenting with phobias or conditions like OCD. The goals are to gradually expose clients to their fears or obsessions, teach them skills to regulate their discomfort, and extinguish their need to engage in compulsions or avoidance skills.

Integrative

I bring a holistic and integrative approach to therapy, combining a wide range of treatment modalities, which allow me to tailor my treatment to the unique needs of my clients and create more meaningful change. I am a big believer in the mind body connection and combine both cognitive and more somatic practices.
