Hello! I'll get right to the point - these are the main issues I specialize in: 1. TRAUMA/PTSD. This includes all types of trauma (physical, sexual, emotional, psychological) and residual trauma symptoms (OCD, anxiety, depression). 2. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders. This includes all types of OCD, uncertainty, and doubt. PLEASE NOTE: Talk therapy is NOT a suitable treatment for OCD. I use a combination of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), as well as Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) to assist me in my work with OCD cases. 3. SELF and RELATIONSHIP ISSUES, including: a. CODEPENDENCY (i.e. people pleasing, inability to say no, fear of upsetting others, lack of assertiveness, chronic feelings of obligation). b. PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE (manipulative friends, family, romantic partners, controlling relationships, cults, abusive churches, workplace bullying, hazing, sexual coercion, undue influence, toxic people of all kinds). c. IDENTITY CONCERNS (poor boundaries, lack of purpose/identity, career and higher education concerns, narcissism, former cult members). Do any of these describe you or your situation? If so, I'd love to meet you and talk about how we can work together to overcome your struggles. Feel free to browse through my profile and if you feel so inclined, make an appointment so we can work toward restoring balance to your world again.

In the past decade, I’ve worked with clients who are so vastly different, yet in their humanity, so alike. From narcotic treatment facilities, assisted living communities, and community mental health centers, the struggle with addiction, or a history of traumatic experiences, the common thread is human suffering and one’s incredible capacity for healing and growth. I truly believe that people already have everything they need to grow and heal, and the therapeutic relationship is simply the space we create where one can find their strengths. My ideal client is willing to engage in therapy to heal, grow or simply feel better. I am able to work with a variety of people from different populations due to my non-judgmental stance and curiosity about other people. I am adept at working with individuals who experience multiple problems simultaneously due to my willingness to work with other providers. I am trauma informed and culturally sensitive. I use an Existential-Humanistic perspective blended with an understanding of each individual's unique character defenses to focus on emotions in the moment. I pull from many intervention modalities to tailor an evidence-based and individualized experience of human connectedness that is based in compassion. I am an EMDR-trained therapist. I work with clients 18 years and older individually or in groups. Special populations I treat include LGBTQIA+, BIPOC individuals experiencing racial trauma, intergenerational trauma or both, men, perinatal/postnatal support, survivors of Trauma, older adults (60+), active military, veterans and their adult family members. Hi! My name is Jose Rodriguez, I have been working in behavioral health since 2008, and it has been a very rewarding experience. I have an energetic and enthusiastic approach. Please note that I am licensed in both California and New York. I stay up to date with the latest studies to provide the best care possible. I am well versed in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy. I am originally from New York, so I have had the opportunity to gain experience at reputable institutions such as New York Presbyterian Hospital and Montefiore Health System. I have also served as Director of the Behavior Health Department at Salinas Valley Health in Salinas, California. I earned my BA in Psychology from Boston College and my Master of Social Work from Fordham University. I also earned my MBA in Healthcare Administration in 2019. Outside of work, I enjoy boxing, playing golf, yoga, lifting weights, and going to the beach! The goal in psychotherapy is for you to become your own therapist. We would achieve this in a collaborative and strategic manner. There has always been a need to address our emotional well being but until recent times, this topic is more accepted than ever to discuss. Not only do I help people address their problems, but I also aim to help people be self-actualizing.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by New York rather than a city like New York City?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across New York from Buffalo to Rochester! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in New York.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD)?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need. For example, your selected specialty, Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD), is filtering therapists in New York that work with patients with similar concerns.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
