My name is David Burkett, and I'm a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in Arizona. My counseling style is open, accepting and relaxed in conversational approach with use of active listening skills. I have extensive experience in my current practice in working with clients in individual and couples therapy who struggle in their relationships because of difficulties in communication and challenges in resolving interpersonal conflicts that arise from deep seated emotions and possible irrational beliefs and fears. One of my specialties in counseling is using a person-centered counseling approach with motivational assistance to help my clients foster better self-esteem and enhanced personal relationships. I am described by my clients as supportive, caring, and compassionate, with a good sense of humor. I like to help clients focus on identifying those core issues that result in current struggles and help identify your strengths to maximize them to overcome obstacles and hopefully learn better communication skills. I'm here to help the client sort through the things that are difficult right now and offer a safe place to be open and honest without fear of judgment. I want to help clients work on the struggles they are facing and offer a safe place to explore thoughts and feelings.
In our first session together, we'll start with brief introductions, then take a careful look at the specific challenges that are affecting you now. This will help me create a plan for us to work together in future sessions to meet the goals you want to achieve for positive change.
I have over six years of experience as a trauma-informed therapist with a proven success record of helping clients like yourself approach life challenges and develop a plan for lasting positive change. My clients, with my assistance, effectively identify the root issue of their presenting challenges and develop plans to reduce negative intensity and achieve goals and objectives for recovery with measurable progress.
I have used trauma-informed care in my practice, utilizing CBT and EMDR along with safety and stabilization techniques for clients who present with adverse life events.
I utilize a relaxed, conversational style which allows clients to speak openly about their individual challenges and, with reflective listening, I provide psychoeducation about need for self-regulation techniques with assignments to practice them at home.
I have had over 4 years of experience in practicing EMDR with average reduction of SUD symptoms from 9 out of 10 to a 2 out of 10 for most clients, with lasting effects of reduced trauma triggers of anxiety and depression.
I emphasize the client's inherent strengths to them as evidence of their capacity to be resilient and overcome current emotional challenges. Clients respond favorably to feedback about individual strengths I point out to them.
