Dr. Kenya is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (TN) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (KY). Dr. Kenya is committed to creating space that allows for people to show up unapologetically and with great authenticity. Dr. Kenya believes that healing is a journey, not a destination. Additionally, she believes that we as people should not live in isolation, but rather in collaboration with community to resolve internal and external system related problems. Dr. Kenya is a practitioner who understands the macro impact on micro experiences. She desires to create space for liberation and healing while uprooting the systemic practice of white supremacy.
In the first session, clients can expect to be welcomed with gratitude for choosing me as their therapist. Clients can expect to share reasoning for coming to therapy at this time, get any questions answered, collaboratively create goals for services, and have space to learn about me as a therapist and the therapeutic process.
I build rapport easily. I have an excellent ability to connect life experiences, emotions, and present behaviors. I also thoroughly enjoy providing space for people to learn and unlearn to live the life that is desired.
Clients who desire to unpack life experiences, understand intergenerational trauma or how experiences are passed down, exploring root causes of present behaviors, and gaining emotional awareness are all prime for services.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is used in my practice to assist clients with understanding how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors impact one another and learning to impact any of the three can begin to facilitate desired change.
I have been working with couples for eight years, assisting couples with understanding how life experiences show up in intimate relationships for greater understanding of thought processes and behaviors that impact communication, intimacy, and every day interactions.
I have a strong understanding of what it means to be culturally sensitive both in professional practice and in my personal life, the two are not separate. Seeing people for who they are, where they come from, and how environment impacts life in full range is paramount in understanding relationships, fostering relationships that are desired, and building deeper connection with sense of self.
I have been a family therapist for eight years. I understand the impact of having multiple people in the room to facilitate growth, change, and reach desired outcomes.
I incorporate narrative therapy in my practice by helping to create space for storytelling and redefining life experiences through unpacking emotions, releasing any internalized feelings, and understanding how experiences can be externalized for greater clarity and emotional awareness.
